This is a very atypical '03 as the elegant, pure and upper register red pinot fruit is as racy and classic as the nose of the '02. The middle weight flavors are punchy and beautifully delineated but not particularly dense and while the balance is near perfect, this is perhaps not as muscular and dramatic as most young Bonnes Mares tend to be. Still, this is a gorgeous wine and remarkably approachable though the balance will permit it to age for years.

Véronique Drouhin characterized the 2003 vintage as one of exceptionally low yields as our average wine came in between only 18 and 20 hl/ha. Sugars were good but we did have to correct some though not all of the cuvees. As it turned out, we were happy that we didn't correct all of them as there was the fascinating phenomenon of acidities actually going up during the primary fermentations! The Drouhin '03s are mostly in line with the overall quality of the vintage, which is to say mixed with some real standouts such as the Bonnes Mares and a few that disappointed, like the Charmes-Chambertin read more...

($113) Moderately saturated medium red. A bit sullen on the nose today, hinting at medicinal dark berries, tree bark, mocha, earth, singed herbs and chocolatey overripeness. Rich, dense and backward, with sweet fruit complicated by herbs and earth. In a drier style, currently dominated by cool, medicinal tones. Is this stunted today, or is it flat?
