User Reviews for Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau Primeur
Add your reviewServed slightly chilled. Light purple in color. Banana and tropical fruit on the nose. This wine doesn't have the same potency in the nose that the other Nouveaus I have tried this year had. Bright red fruits on the palate with tart acidity. Easy tannins. I rated this wine a 3.5/5 but I would place it on the low side of a 3.5 rating. I have tried less expensive Beaujolais Nouveau this year that I enjoyed more.
2nd Beaujolais Nouveau I have had this year. Distinct tropical fruit smell on the nose and a dark purple color. Light bodied wine with a dominant banana taste and not much finish. Not as good as the Georges Duboeuf Nouveau but still very enjoyable.
This is the first Beaujolais Nouveau I've tried this year and it was pretty good. I have never really been excited about this wine, but I always make a point of having 1 or 2 tastes each year. It was pretty in color, as always and the nose was wonderfully fruity. I think that is the best thing about Beaujolais Nouveau. The sensory experience is very pleasant. I give this one a 3. I like it, but it did not stand out in any spectacular way.
Winemaker's Notes:
Beaujolais Nouveau: the wines have a beautiful, intense, purple-blue colour. The aromas have the natural fragrance of red berry fruit with some undertones of violet. They are altogether straightforward, refreshing and very pleasant. On the palate, the wines are easy to drink and give the impression of a red fruit salad. It is a classic “primeur” wine. Beaujolais Villages: they too have a nice bluish colour. Their aromas are more reminiscent of black berries. There is also greater complexity in the aromas. On the palate, the wines show more richness, “gras” (velvety feel) and structure. In terms of quality, there is a certain resemblance with some of the Crus of Beaujolais. Although not meant for keeping, they certainly will age well. Conclusion: 2008 is a beautiful “primeur” vintage, a somewhat unexpected result considering the vagaries of the weather this summer.
