Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau 2017

Member Review by zufrieden:

Trying this one a bit late - 5 days late to be precise - but the wait seems worthwhile: this Primeur is very Beaujolais and Nouveau with tropical fruit candy on the nose (your choice but pomegranate is one you can hardly miss - or sweet banana). The concentration for a primeur is also excellent - a bit darker mauve in colour than usual and entry is bracing with cooked Serviceberry and wild blueberry dominating. Less stem (bitter tannin) than most. 85 points.

In 1880, Joseph Drouhin, who was from the Chablis region originally, chose the city of Beaune to found the business that bears his name.  Over the years and with each generation, the vineyard estate grew.  At the same time, the founder's passionate search for excellence and knowledge was handed down like a family heirloom; Maison Joseph Drouhin continues to ensure this valuable family heritage. Dedication to the diversity of Burgundy has always been the sole focus and vocation of Maison Joseph Drouhin, as vineyards - mostly premier and grand crus - were acquired in all major areas.   Out of firm conviction, Drouhin has adopted a biological and biodynamic approach to viticulture.  Listening to nature: from vine to glass, at every step in the elaboration of the wine, a profound respect and deference to nature prevails. From its very beginning, Maison Joseph Drouhin has aimed for an ideal of perfection and elegance.  The style of Joseph Drouhin combines balance, harmony and character, providing infinite pleasure.   Thanks to its open-minded world view, Joseph Drouhin introduces the best of Burgundy to all continents.  Its active presence in many countries is the surest proof of its desire to get acquainted and understand other cultures and styles of living. Bright purple in the glass. Nose of blue and blackberries with tones of tea. Wonderful bright fruit with an almost lambrusco-like zing. Some citrus tones on the finish. Not a long lasting wine. After some time open, it really got some more depth and a fair amount of complexity with some almost merlot-like qualities. Very nice. This one might age a bit!

Excellent Beaujolais. Nuances of blackberry and other smooth flavors are subtle. My fiancee and I generally like pleasant wines, and this is one. It will go well at our wedding and should please really everyone. One of the most versatile reds I've tasted. I have a feeling that this innocent and excellent wine may not satisfy long-time aficionados, because it's flavors are very well balanced and mellow. But we like this wine (and many Washington/Oregon wines) for this reason.

Served slightly chilled. Light purple in color. Banana and tropical fruit on the nose. This wine doesn't have the same potency in the nose that the other Nouveaus I have tried this year had. Bright red fruits on the palate with tart acidity. Easy tannins. I rated this wine a 3.5/5 but I would place it on the low side of a 3.5 rating. I have tried less expensive Beaujolais Nouveau this year that I enjoyed more.

2nd Beaujolais Nouveau I have had this year. Distinct tropical fruit smell on the nose and a dark purple color. Light bodied wine with a dominant banana taste and not much finish. Not as good as the Georges Duboeuf Nouveau but still very enjoyable.

This is the first Beaujolais Nouveau I've tried this year and it was pretty good. I have never really been excited about this wine, but I always make a point of having 1 or 2 tastes each year. It was pretty in color, as always and the nose was wonderfully fruity. I think that is the best thing about Beaujolais Nouveau. The sensory experience is very pleasant. I give this one a 3. I like it, but it did not stand out in any spectacular way.

Bright purple color, a very intense nose, reminiscent of violets, peonies and red berries. On the palate, it has a silky smoothness, and its delicious fruit lingers for a long time.
