Joseph Carr 'Napa Valley' Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Member Review by rwb5150:

A harmonious Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah boasts big black fruit with woodsy/smokey/leathery undertones and scents. My wife and I both experienced the slightest maple notes, which was very interesting and enjoyable. I picked up a bunch on sale and have been chipping away at it enjoying the bottling consistency and velvety tannins. I read that grapes are brought in from a number of great vineyards including: Sycamore, Rutherford Bench, St Helena, Beckstoffer, Chateau Montelana and Diamond Mountain.

My rating of this wine is based on price vs. quality ratio and I know Joe. His goal is to utilize the philosophy that great wine can be drunk every day as a part of the culture the old world embraces and the new is coming to know. It just has to be at a price everyone can appreciate. I think he's done a phenomenal job at making high quality wines for the category with a package and message that elevates him by philosophy alone. One glass and you'll know what I am talking about; rarely will you find a wine that can be obtained for less than $20 that performs at the $35-40 level and Joseph Carr has done so with the greatest of ease.

Good rich red fruit and solid structure. Nice and rich. A real classic california cab. A little tart on the finish, but not much to worry about. Decent backbone. Very pleasant all round.

The 04 was great, the 05 isn't even in the same ballpark, not nearly worth 20 bones.

Background: This Napa Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a traditional old-school approach to winemaking, where terroir is allowed to express itself and the art of the blend results in wines of balance and complexity. Joseph Carr and celebrated winemaker Aaron Pott work with small growers in the Napa Valley and Rutherford AVAs to assemble this cuvée, which offers richness, depth, and approachability. Winemaking: Hand-picked at the peak of flavor development, the grapes are crushed and cold-soaked for 24 hours. The cap is punched down three times daily to maximize flavor extraction during fermentation and maceration, which lasts 10 to 15 days. The wine is aged in 100% French oak for 16 to 18 months. Vintage Notes: Called “a dream vintage” by Wine Spectator, Napa’s 2014 harvest was unusually early due to the ongoing drought. Ideal temperatures and some rain relief in late winter set the vintage up to rival the great 2012 and 2013. Look for powerful fruit and ripe tannins. Tasting Notes: The wine features aromas of fresh black cherry, tobacco, and vanilla. Full-bodied yet balanced with food-friendly acidity and tannin, the long finish highlights flavors of black plum and chocolate. Varietal Composition: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Merlot 5% Petit Verdot 4% Cabernet Franc 4% other pH: 3.55 TA: 7.1 g/L RS: 0.6 g/L Alc.: 13.9%

Tasting Notes: Fig, red cherry, blackberry pie, forest floor, mince meats, and cocoa. A big attack of black currant flows to layers of dense tannin, earthy chocolate, and dried fruit, while nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon add complexity to the finish. - Winery pH: 3.81 TA: 6.2 g/100ml RS: 6 g/L Alc.: 14.5%

This wine displays a deep purple hue, and has great clarity for wine that is traditionally unfiltered. The bouquet offers scents of ripe black currant, smoke and saddle. Flavors include dark cherry and ripe plum with a hint of vanilla and cocoa dust. Firm, but approachable tannin structure accents a balanced and long finish. - Winery
