The largest expanses of Jose Maria da Fonseca vines are found in Setubal. each utilising appropriate growing techniques to maximise qualitative potential according to individual ecological conditions.
Sorta jammy red fruit on the nose, darker still in the mouth. There's little nuance or grace for me here, but that's alright. It's a red that calls for a short, cheap glass, a wobbly table in a dark corner. A cigarette, a Moleskine. A companion who doesn't speak the language. Bring us a carafe of it; it'll all work out in the end.
Juicy cherry aromas, like cough syrup and cherry cola. Palate is somewhat more rustic, with burnt raspberry flavors. Medium acidity wine, this is a nice wine for spring.
Lots of cherry, kind of acidic, the body is really weak. Aromas of roasted chicken are enticing, but there's no body. What a cork-tease.
Cherry, oak, a bit of something like cognac. Sharp acidic notes and not much tannin it seems. I don't really like the body on this.
Big ripe fruity nose with some lunden's cough drops and a slight vegetal component. Really nice ripe big syrupy mouthfeel with moderate complexity on the finish, which leaves my mouth feeling like I just had cheerios.
Faint fruit on the nose - had to pull pretty hard to coax it out. A little on the thin and acidic side with bitter cherries and a slightly overripe plum component. The finish is a bit autumn and cola and tastes a bit like a cotes-du-rhone wannabe. Not a bad wine, but for me it's a tough one to pin down.
Let's start at the end: there's a prune note that hangs on for the finish. Before you arrive, you'll pass through dust, dark fruit, a bit of chocolate, and right at the beginning of the journey, big fruits & cola-nuts.
