A blend of Touriga Nacional (59%) and Syrah (41%) Oaky on the nose and rather toasty with very earthy, clay like soil tones, hints of tobacco and a sweet almond top note. Rich and round on entry and a bit dense on the palate, this shows some sweetness behind the flavors of blackberries, dried thyme and chocolate. There are some dry tannins on the palate and they clip the finish a bit though a touch of heat does also show on the finish. nose. A bit new world styled, chunky and a bit anonymous. 87pts

Deep maroon in color. THe nose shows pepper, saddle leather, and a background of fruit. Soft and lush in the mouth with firm tannins and medium acidity. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, pepper, chocolate, earth and leather. Dry quick finish. 3.5/5 [NR]

13.5% Dark as night with some cloudiness from lack of filtering. Nose of pepper, nuts, bacon, candy like cherry, and smoke. Really wound up tight. Smooth and soft in the mouth with firm tannins. Flavors of dried cherries, subtle spices and chocolate. I reopened this again after 3 days, a big too long and it had lost some of it's body, though the nose brought out blueberries and more spices. Really a beautiful wine worth looking for. 4/5 [NR]

TN: 1962 Moscatel Setúbal Superior, J.M. da Fonseca (Portugal); 18% pabv; $50/500 ml, private transaction; Broadbent Selections, San Francisco, CA.Barbara's birthday dinner one day late at W Restaurant, Sidney, OH. Chef David Weygant prepared a wonderful one-off dinner for the two of us. This was the dessert wine and was shared all around the restaurant and with the staff.Stored most likely in bulk in the region of production and bottled there about ten years ago.Decanted quite cleanly off moderate grayish sediment. Deep lively amber-brown, with a touch of duskiness, with a medium-heavy body.Glossy, shiny, grapy fruit on the nose with a powerful, complex caramel underlayment. Shows successively notes of linseed oil, pine (turpentine), a touch of ethyl acetate, and smoke. Great depth.Rich and sweet; full balancing acidity;full and sleek in the mouth with a smoky, earthy, slightly bitter hint (I attribute this to the soil as it's often present in these wines), and an enormous, sleek, nearly everlasting finish. Beautiful match with créme brulée and a chocolate whipped-cream brownie. Kept developing over two or more hours. Superb. 95/100.
