Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

“Jordan is often considered more Saint-Julien in style for its early drinkability, forward fruit and elegant tannins. But the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon follows all the cues of 2013 and then some—certainly more reminiscent of Bordeaux’s Pauillac with its broader tannins and sturdier structure. Classic black fruit is framed perfectly by a higher percentage of French oak, which assuages the lengthy fruit tannins to create a lasting finish. This will be a long-lived vintage.” —Winemaker Rob Davis Winery notes

Rich, savory aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry and earthy plum on the nose, lightly floral and complex. Explodes on the palate with juicy cranberry and red currant flavors, a bit of herb, cherry fruit and dry, dusty earth and leather. This is mellow and smooth but very expressive, with herb, fruit and tannic earth in equal parts, good structure and a complex blend of fruit and aromatics. 91 pts.

Elegant and mellow red fruit aromas of cassis and strawberry along with a floral note. This delicate and delicious Cabernet is soft and supple in the mouth, with balanced acidity and ripe blackberry fruit, gentle leather and cocoa notes mix with a bit of black cherry and coffee. For lovers of a gentler, silky style of Cabernet which is perfectly food friendly, this is a real treat.

Sweet tobacco, toasted spice, iris and maybe a hint of cumin even lays on the nose over a bed of soil tinged wild cherry and candied black cherry fruit. Wide open on the palate, this is soft and bright with acid more than tannin supporting the fruit on the palate. Showing good depth with late arriving tannins adding some firmness on the backend, there’s a nice subtle complexity to this with dried herb and nutty tones leading to a clean, mineral and cherry pit finish that shows a spicy side to the tannins. Well behaved and easy to like this is a crowd pleaser that is not dumbed to down to its lowest common denominator. 90pts

Smoky and slightly nutty on the nose with a hint of earth and dried leaves covered by fresh red cherry and red currant fruit with just a hint of mint. Just a little on the young side, this shows some tension on entry with polished yet abundant tannins and integrated acidity keeping the core of rich, slightly tactile but ultimately fresh fruit under wraps. The oak is adding a nutty layer here, and some lovely spice notes that come out on the back end along with red cherry and currant fruit. This really builds nicely to the long finish which shows lovely interplay of wood spice, fresh fruit and minty notes. Elegant and polished old school California Cabernet. 92pts

Deep purple color. Slight plum and cherry aroma. Fruit forward with black cherry and blackberry notes rounded out with a delightful earthy finish with a touch of herbs. Gentle but noticeable tannins. Good now but probably will be worth aging.

More Euro-style than California. Reminded me very much of Chateau Montelena. Big berry flavors with aromas of forest, raisins, and port. Tannic, big, and beautiful

(includes 16% merlot, 7% petit verdot and 1% malbec; raised in 74% French and 24% American oak): Deep ruby. Fresh cherry, blackcurrant and peppery spices on the nose, with a hint of cured tobacco emerging with aeration. Juicy and precise, with good depth to its bitter cherry and dark berry flavors. Smoke and vanilla notes appear on the finish, which is framed by easygoing, silky tannins. This elegant and approachable cabernet checks in at a relatively low 13.5% alcohol. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon has an exuberant, showy bouquet with touches of black olive and seaweed infusing the bright red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, plush entry. There is plenty of dusty black fruit but it lacks some complexity on the somewhat predictable finish. Drink now-2015. Concentrated, lovely black fruits aromas of blackberry, blueberry and cassis. The mouthfeel is luscious and full with continued flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry with a suggestion of vanilla, coconut and cedar. The soft, round tannins and understated acidity of this wine complement the bright fruit characters to create a balanced Cabernet Sauvignon approachable now or worthy of cellaring for at least 10-15 years.

Winner of the Wine Star Award for the American Winery of the Year! Jordan Vineyards almost single-handedly put Alexander Valley on the map. Since the release their first wine, the 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon, they’ve been a standard bearer for what this warm-climate corner of Sonoma County can produce. And year after year Jordan’s Cabernets continue to deliver bold, ripe flavors, beautifully polished with ideal balance for aging. This 2010 is the latest release and it's a stellar blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. The wine undergoes extended maceration for 21 days and then goes into French and American oak barrels, approximately 12 months in 74% French and 26% American oak barrels; 39% new. The wine is then aged in bottle for 21 months in the winery cellar allowing the tannins to soften and the flavors the mesh. The result is the signature style of Jordan Cab, forward and supple yet well structured for aging in your cellar.Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 90 points and it scored 92 points in the Critics Challenge Wine Competition. They said "Big, yet not overdone. Lovely herbal earthy notes add balance. Supple tannins and engaging freshness makes it easy to recommend."

In this vintage, the winery stays true to its reputation for making balanced, more restrained Cabernet, offering firm, structured tannins and bright cassis and blackberry around a deft sprinkling of dried herb. Built to age through 2025, it is equally enjoyable now, after a decant. Small percentages of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec factor in.

The Jordan family never followed the herd toward hyperripe cabernet — this 2010 clocks in at a cool 13.5 percent alcohol. It feels like a juicy, old-school cabernet, its sleek red currant character edged with floral tones and a savory edge of red pepper skin. The acidity is bright and the tannins gravelly. It should age well, but is already enjoyable. Try it with pot roast.
