Johnnie Walker is a classic brand of blended Scotch whisky, named for John “Johnnie” Walker, a grocer who began producing blended whiskies for his store in 1820. In 1877, his son Alexander officially registered it as Walker’s Old Highland Whisky. The iconic square bottle was originated in 1870 as a solution to more fragile styles and better shelf fit. Another innovation is the angled label, which allows for larger, more visible text. The “striding man” icon that has become synonymous with the brand was first conceived from a sketch in 1908. In 1909, they introduced the color-coded labels which identify the different blend variations starting with Red and Black. Around this time, the official name was changed to Johnnie Walker. In 1920 to celebrate 100 years of production, Alexander Walker II created the recipe for the blend that decades later in 1995 would become the Gold label, but at this time was only given to select directors in the company.  In 1992, after decades of continued commercial success and numerous accolades, the company released their ultimate Blue Label, a blend of rare aged single malts. The Green label, a blend of single and grain malts, was released in 1997. In 2008, Johnnie Walker released the King George V Blue blend, a rare collection of whiskies dating back to the King’s reign in the early 20th century. The Double Black, a more smokey version of the Black label using heavier peated malts is also now available.  Read less
