What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

The aim with Entity is to produce a wine true to the Barossa Valley, variety, and vintage. 2006 was a very good follow on from the excellent 2005 vintage. Good winter and spring rains and favourable conditions for flowering and fruit set resulted in good crops. Mild to warm conditions over summer and rain towards the end of February resulted in rapid maturation and an early start to vintage in the first week of March. Shiraz was all but finished by the end of March producing wines with rich flavour intensity and well balanced structure. The more subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe blackberry, read more...

The 2006 vintage of Entity is an intricately structured wine comprised of rich and vibrant Shirazfruit. A true reflection of Barossa's soil and climate, Entity displays youthful blackberry, blueberryand savory French oak aromas. Entity's palate is rich and generous, with concentrated dark fruitand fine, ripe tannins. The finish is elegant and carries through with excellent fruit intensity. Traditional winemaking practices and seventeen months in French oak barriques will ensure theage worthiness of this third release. Enjoy the 2006 vintage now or cellar it for 10 years to garneradditional complexity.

2 hour decant. Beautiful deep dark blackish hue. The nose is a very pretty subdued elegant soft cassis and warm blueberry pie. Very nice. The palate brings those qualities forward and adds to it with its silky mouth feel, very low-key slight sweet fruits with the red cassis, blueberries, boysenberry, and pomegranate. Nice notes of soy, slight black pepper, exotic Asian spices, and cedar. The tannins were in check, but surely present and this will be amazing in 2-3 years with no danger of decline anytime before my retirement date. A wonderful long and pleasing aftertaste that went beyond the 60 read more...

The 2006 Entity is a 100% Shiraz cuvee exhibiting a bit more restraint than the Plexus. It presents an aromatic array of smoke pepper Asian spices tar blueberry and blackberry liqueur. On the palate it is full-bodied smooth-textured deep and intensely flavored but not over the top. Its impeccable balance should permit 5-7 years of additional cellaring and it should offer prime drinking from 2014 to 2028. It too is a superb value. John Duval was the principal winemaker at Penfolds Grange from 1986 to 2002. RP
