John Duval Wines Shiraz Barossa Valley Entity 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

The aim of Entity is to produce a wine true to the Barossa Valley, variety and vintage. 2004 was an excellent vintage, producing wines of elegance, purity of fruit and fine tannin structure. The more subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe blackberry, blueberry fruit. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed with Entity, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow great potential for improvement in the bottle under good cellaring conditions for a least 10 years. Region: Barossa Valley Variety: Shiraz - sourced from old vineyards in the Stockwell, Light Pass, Ebenezer and Krondorf regions in the north and east of the Barossa Valley. Winemaking: Fermentation with submerged cap in both traditional old open tanks and small stainless steel fermenters. Oak Maturation: 100% barrel maturation with 47% new fine grain French oak and the balance, 2, 3 and 4 year-old French and American oak hogsheads (3001). Some batches barrel fermented. Technical Notes: Alcohol 14.5% pH 3.55 TA 5.7g/l Tasting: * Colour: Dense ruby purple * Nose: Rich, fully ripe, but not over-ripe. Blackberry, blueberry with a savoury edge of spice and classy oak * Palate: Intense but elegant; full bodied with fruit sweetness and balanced tannins. A core of dark berry fruit and complexing oak leads to a long finish

He has been honored with Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year award in 1995, as well as International Winemaker of the Year (International Wine and Spirit Competition, UK, 1989) and twice recipient of Red Winemaker of the Year (International Wine Challenge, UK, 1991 & 2000). He currently resides in the Barossa Valley , one of Australia 's most famous wine regions, particularly known for its old vine Shiraz . Four generations of the Duval clan have been vignerons in South Australia . Viticulture The inspiration of the Barossa Valley’s old vine, low yielding Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre created Plexus, combining elements into a beautifully structured blend. Traditional winemaking practices and fifteen months in French oak barriques will ensure the age worthiness of this first ever release, ensuring a long cellar life. Entity Shiraz is an intricately structured wine comprised of rich and vibrant Shiraz fruit. A true reflection of Barossa's soil and climate, Entity displays deep color and distinctive structure. Intense and elegant, Entity expresses aromas of ripe blackberry, blueberry, and a hint of spice. Read less

First Australian wine I really enjoyed. Complex and elegant with well balanced tannins. Should age well. Drank it Thanksgiving 2008 with Tuna Tartare, Pork Chops with Gorgonzola sauce, and Shitaki Mushroom Risotto. Will def buy again.
