Johan Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Orego 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Hay, birds nest, so soft and subtle it’s seductive with a core of warm raspberry coulis framed by gentle suggestions of baking spice and lovely notes of quinine, porcini, drying flowers an old library, and history, This wine smells of history. It’s light and bright with plenty of acid and tannins that hold up the diaphanous band of raspberry fruit gently flecked with mushroom and spice tones. The structure bullies your palate on the backend a bit but the fruit sneaks under and out with a wild strawberry and violet pastille quality that is fruity and delightfully savory. 94pts

At first the nose seems dominate by oak influence with vanilla and spice tones but with time the earthy fruit begins to rise from the glass. Earthy and stemmy with lots of cola and root beer, this lacks some focus. Very fresh feeling with a natural quality to the fruit supported by big structural elements, the palate impression of this wine is certainly different than what the nose promises. Wild berry tones on the palate are a touch gamy and sauvage with earth and spices tones playing supporting roles. This pushes through with a bright and assertively refreshing finish. Give it another year though it’s excellent today. 90pt

Plastic, perfumed aromas. A thin wine, good acidity and some fruit.

I didn't enjoy it much personally, as I prefer stronger wines, but the wine has a lot of character and complex flavors. Nice tartness with raspberry and blueberry notes, a touch of sweetness, not very tannic.

smells like paint, has the red fruit characteristics but also these subtle paint chips...earthy, spicey, darker fruit components, black cherry and raspberry

Definitely getting paint on the nose. There's some cherry fruit here but those chemical overtones are very distracting for me. Grainy finish - that is, what didn't get poured down the sink.

Bing cherry on the nose with leather and orange rind. Tannins reminded me of walnuts and almonds. Soft at first but bitter and closed on the finish. Ends on menthol, raspberry and cherry notes. Gorse and heather on the finish as well.

Strong nose with oak and spice. Full flavor. Nice, long-lasting finish. Would be perfect for a date night with my cute boyfriend. 90/100

really enjoyed this wine. not too strong on the nose but the deep blend of blackberries, cherries, and currants balances it out. smooth with a bit of spice, medium acidity. a good drawn out finish so that the taste continues to subtly linger on your taste bud's memory
