Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldcapsule 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Writing a tasting note for a young WS GK like this - and this goes for the majority of the wines above - can be a lesson in futility; the aromas and flavours continually oscillate and even the shape of the wine seems to shift each time you return to the glass. The notes below do their best. We'll add that this encapsulates all that we love about this remarkable grower's wines; celestial power, filigreed elegance, invigorating freshness, vineyard clarity and off-the scale deliciousness! It's a wine of remarkable finesse, transparency and length; a benchmark example of the vineyard. Those who grab some will never regret it (on the contrary)!

The estate has 14 acres of holdings in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyards. Only Riesling is grown and harvested at these sites. The most important of these sites are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich, in terms of both quantity and quality for the winery. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted. Depending on the vintage, the average annual production is 10,000 to 13,000 cases of wine. Stuart Pigott says of J.J. Prum that "since the early 1920's its wines have been among Germany’s best Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form". Wine writer Stephen Brook says that "The wines, whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extra-ordinary longevity".  Read less
