Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Spätlese Graacher Himmelreich 2003

External Review by JJ Buckley Fine Wines:

About a third of this wine was poured out, then the bottle was violently shaken to help rid it of CO2 and to allow the SO2 to blow-off some. It was then allowed to rest and aerate before being tasted. My instincts suggest that those willing to wait 1... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The estate has 14 acres of holdings in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyards. Only Riesling is grown and harvested at these sites. The most important of these sites are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich, in terms of both quantity and quality for the winery. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted. Depending on the vintage, the average annual production is 10,000 to 13,000 cases of wine. Stuart Pigott says of J.J. Prum that "since the early 1920's its wines have been among Germany’s best Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form". Wine writer Stephen Brook says that "The wines, whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extra-ordinary longevity".  Read less

Subtle bouquet of gooseberry and nut oil, with a trace of something floral. On the palate the creamy nectarine fruit is counterpointed by citrus and slate. The long finish blends spices and mineral salts.

Very racy and powerful, with lots of mineral and sea salt notes to the fresh and vibrant flavors of nectarine and lemon-lime. Pure and long on the finish, with hints of licorice and savory herb. Best from 2012 through 2022.

A fantastic spätlese. Rich, succulent and harmonious, boasting peach, citrus and mineral aromas and flavors, all pure and displayed with finesse on a well-integrated structure. It picks up a creaminess and vanilla note on the endless finish. Drink now through 2020.

Aromatic, this Riesling shows delicacy and balance in its floral, apricot and citrus notes. Its airy and appealing, with a mouthwatering tanginess. Drink now through 2020. -BS Wine Spectator. Pink grapefruit, banana, cassis and lily perfume announce the extreme ripeness of fruit that informed the Prums' 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese. Juicy and extroverted on the palate, it packs a sense of sassy brightness that perfectly compliments any tendency toward extravagant or over-indulgent ripeness. As to your being over-indulgent by drinking some, I'd say, "yes, you would be - fortunately." I see no need to wait for a half dozen years to approach this. On the other hand, if you wait 25, this wine will still be waiting for you and in good shape.

From famed producer JJ Prum comes this atypical, hot vintage Riesling that will convert almost anyone into an off-dry wine lover.
