Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This delicate, racy Kabinett combines a characteristic minerality, lightness concurring with tension, a crisp acidity and fine fruit aromas and flavors.

The estate has 14 acres of holdings in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyards. Only Riesling is grown and harvested at these sites. The most important of these sites are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich, in terms of both quantity and quality for the winery. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted. Depending on the vintage, the average annual production is 10,000 to 13,000 cases of wine. Stuart Pigott says of J.J. Prum that "since the early 1920's its wines have been among Germany’s best Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form". Wine writer Stephen Brook says that "The wines, whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extra-ordinary longevity".  Read less

Manfred Prüms 2009 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is a bit bigger than usual, and perhaps a bit drier as well at 9% abv, but it still displays hallmark notes of slate, lime and apple. Fruit, mineral and gingery spice notes linger on the finish. J.C. Wine Enthusiast. A Riesling wine from Mosel Saar Ruwer in Germany. 2009 Joh Jos Prum Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 750ml

The Prumsandrsquo; 2009 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett is refreshingly and lusciously dominated by lime and grapefruit, dark cherry and blackcurrant. A judicious sense of sweetness allows for the penetration of invigorating, mouth-watering salinity in its finish, and tart notes of citrus zest and berry skin add to the sense of invigoration. Slight hints of fermentative afterbirth are inoffensive. Iandrsquo;d feel free to follow this delicate delight for at least 15 years.

This vintage is highly praised for elegant wines with a very ripe, aromatic fruitiness and an extremely harmonious acidity. This Kabinett shows pure, intense, deep fruit that is slightly mineral, all typical of Prüm's wines. With great length and just a hint of sweetness, it is a wonderful representation of what German wines are.

Alluring scents of honeysuckle and clover mingled with yeastiness; bittersweet notes of apple pip and skin, render the Prum 2009 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett an invigorating treat. Very subtly creamy, it nevertheless puts its emphasis on refreshment and clarity of flavors, with stony mineral character and inner-mouth floral perfume clearly discernable through gossamer folds of fruit. This finishes with terrific persistence yet understatement. A particularly restrained sense of sweetness and efficacious acids suggest to me a wine that could be enjoyed more in its first 3andndash;5 years than is usually the case with Prum Rieslings. But it ought to keep well for at least 15 years

Extremely fragrant, expressive and beautifully put together, offering peach, lime, slate and a hint of quinine flavors. Firm and balanced, it should age well into the next decade. Drink now through 2015.

The Prum 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett displays the classic fresh apple, apple blossom, and vanilla of the site. Crushed stone and the bitter side of the vanilla bean help temper the sweetness here. This shows alluring creaminess along with refined delicacy, finishing long on fresh apple, sweet floral perfume, and wet stone along with hints of anise and vanilla. "This is Kabinett the way we imagine it," remarks Katharine Prûm, although hardly surprisingly, the estate's quantities at this Pradikat level are smaller than are those at Spätlese grade. And I would add that it is unlikely very many vintages of this iconic Mosel will age more expressively or successfully than the one under consideration here.
