Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This delicate, racy Kabinett combines a characteristic minerality, lightness concurring with tension, a crisp acidity and fine fruit aromas and flavors.

The estate has 14 acres of holdings in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyards. Only Riesling is grown and harvested at these sites. The most important of these sites are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich, in terms of both quantity and quality for the winery. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted. Depending on the vintage, the average annual production is 10,000 to 13,000 cases of wine. Stuart Pigott says of J.J. Prum that "since the early 1920's its wines have been among Germany’s best Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form". Wine writer Stephen Brook says that "The wines, whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extra-ordinary longevity".  Read less

Comparing this with the Graacher Kabinett decisively displays the difference of terroir. Vanilla and baked apple flavors are here folded into a polished, creamy palate. The finish is delicate but extended, subtle apple pit bitterness and slate minerality adding interest along the way.

The Prumsandrsquo; 2009 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett is refreshingly and lusciously dominated by lime and grapefruit, dark cherry and blackcurrant. A judicious sense of sweetness allows for the penetration of invigorating, mouth-watering salinity in its finish, and tart notes of citrus zest and berry skin add to the sense of invigoration. Slight hints of fermentative afterbirth are inoffensive. Iandrsquo;d feel free to follow this delicate delight for at least 15 years.

Floral and smoke aromas give way to peach, apple and lime flavors in this delicate, silky Riesling. All is well-integrated with the bright structure and lingers lazily on the long, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2024.

Fuller in body than the Graacher Himmelreich (recommended above), this is no less refined, showing a silky texture and graceful balance. Its aromas of tangerine, nectarine and jasmine tea are anchored by darkly vivid notes of slate, feeling energetic and intense.

An initial burnt-match smell should dissipate with either time in the bottle or aeration in the glass. Underneath is a blast of juicy peach and lime-tinged and a delicate, crystalline framework. Long, mineral finish. Best from 2001 through 2007.

Beautifully displayed elements of slate, peach and citrus blossom mark this German white, all integrated and suspended on a feathery, open texture. No shortage of concentration though, with a lingering finish. Drink now through 2005.

Candied apple, toasted almond and vanilla from beginning to end. Nice nip of slate and apple pit in the finish. Clear, pure and lovely in its simplicity.
