Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This vibrant, elegant and classical Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese shows an appealing interplay between a pronounced minerality, crisp acidity and fine fruit aromas and flavours. More ageing will result into even more harmony and finesse.

J.J. Prüm is a member of the Großer Ring Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter. The estate has 14 acres of holdings in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyards. Only Riesling is grown and harvested at these sites. The most important of these sites are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich, in terms of both quantity and quality for the winery. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted. Depending on the vintage, the average annual production is 10,000 to 13,000 cases of wine. Stuart Pigott says of J.J. Prum that "since the early 1920's its wines have been among Germany’s best Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form". Wine writer Stephen Brook says that "The wines, whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extra-ordinary longevity".  Read less

A fantastic spätlese. Rich, succulent and harmonious, boasting peach, citrus and mineral aromas and flavors, all pure and displayed with finesse on a well-integrated structure. It picks up a creaminess and vanilla note on the endless finish. Drink now through 2020.

Prum wines are among the most exciting and delicious Riesling wines of the middle Mosel. They have a reputation for being long-lived because if their slow development - something that may sound like a fault but is, in fact, something desirable. Full of pure stone fruits with a slate-mineral driven finish.

Aromatic, this Riesling shows delicacy and balance in its floral, apricot and citrus notes. It's airy and appealing, with a mouthwatering tanginess. Drink now through 2020.

Very racy and powerful, with lots of mineral and sea salt notes to the fresh and vibrant flavors of nectarine and lemon-lime. Pure and long on the finish, with hints of licorice and savory herb. Best from 2012 through 2022.

Pink grapefruit, banana, cassis and lily perfume announce the extreme ripeness of fruit that informed the Prumsandrsquo; 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese. Juicy and extroverted on the palate, it packs a sense of sassy brightness that perfectly compliments any tendency toward extravagant or over-indulgent ripeness. As to your being over-indulgent by drinking some, Iandrsquo;d say, andldquo;yes, you would be andmdash; fortunately.andrdquo; I see no need to wait for a half dozen years to approach this. On the other hand, if you wait 25, this wine will still be waiting for you and in good shape.

Subtle bouquet of gooseberry and nut oil, with a trace of something floral. On the palate the creamy nectarine fruit is counterpointed by citrus and slate. The long finish blends spices and mineral salts.

My instincts suggest that those willing to wait 10-12 years will find an outstanding wine when they open the 2003 Riesling Spätlese Graacher Himmelreich yet, at present, it does not reveal the depth required to merit such an exalted score. Light to medium-bodied, it displays a broad, supple personality filled with creamy stones, slate, and smoke. Projected maturity: 2014-2024.
