External Reviews for Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr
Tasted blind in the same flight as Pruuml;mrsquo;s Bernkasteler Badstube auslese, this wine is flashier, more of an attention-grabber, with amazing purity and intensity of fruit backed by great length. The fruit flavors of green apple, pineapple and lime are underscored by slate-driven minerality, and the wine, although plump and amply endowed, is well balanced, with superb posture provided by sinewy acids. Surprisingly approachable now, but could last as long as 50 years.
Peach and vanilla aromas. Broad, polished and creamy, yet it lies slightly, even delicately, on the palate. Brown spice, mango and banana suggest the vintagersquo;s extreme ripeness without conveying any overt sense of botrytis. Static yet imposingly rich and layered on the finish.
Stunning. Very aromatic and expressive, offering rose, apricot, lime and mineral notes allied to a clear, gossamer frame. Itrsquo;s well-balanced, though soft in structure and forward today. It should pick up more intensity on the finish with age. Best from 2008 through 2028.
Pale golden yellow. Classy bouquet of ripe apple, vanilla and sweet herbs. Rich on the palate, with a salty, resinous character and undeniably sweet apricot fruit. Unctuous yet vibrantly spicy, with a long, complex finish. This still needs time but will be a great auslese.
Pungent aromas of slate and flowers give way to peach and lime in this unevolved Riesling. The texture is supersilky, with great harmony among all the elements. Terrific length. Needs time. Best from 2014 through 2040.
Cask sample. Beautiful, fresh, crushed grape character which is lively and refreshing. Medium-bodied with medium sweetness and a long fresh finish. Drinkable now.
Aromas of ripe pineapple and spice seem to jump out of the glass. The drinker of this wine will be rewarded with a complex, mouthfilling combination of well defined ripe pinepple that seems to stay on the palate forever before the flavors finally trail off into spice and slate on the finish. This bottle provides a shining example of why the wines of J.J. Prum are among the highest quality and most ageworthy in all of Germany.
