Young and unevolved, yet this shows remarkable clarity and delicacy for 2003. Very silky in texture and bright, framing the apricot, lime and slate flavors nicely. Very harmonious, with a long, lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2020.

The bouquet blossoms in a floral way that seems typical for the 2003 vintage here, as is this wine's imposingly creamy texture. Elegance, lift, clarity, refinement and florality characterize the flavors throughout. In another reflection of the vintage, the essential fruit here is quince rather than apple, tinged with bittersweet vanilla and flowers and a subtle hint of white raisin. Ethereal fruit, flowers and wet stone really cling in the finish.

An almost confectionary sense of sweetness and ripeness pervades the Prum 2009 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese, making it something of an exception in a vintage collection generally noteworthy for the restraint of residual sugar. Apple candy, caramel, and vanilla mingle on a creamy palate, with hints of salt, stone, and apple pit happily offering some counterpoint in a long and otherwise soothing finish. This showed more grip as it opened, and perhaps time will lend more cut and complexity to a Spatlese that on the basis of track record is likely to thrive for another quarter century or more. Incidentally, this represents the first of three lots of "regular" Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese, the last of which was still in tank in September.

A delicious white, full of apple pie, spice and peach aromas and flavors accented by lime and mineral, all on a racy structure. Shows excellent focus and intensity, a succulent texture and a long finish. Best from 2000 through 2008.

Delicate scents of fresh apple, apple jelly, honey and vanilla. Again, this is feather-light in the mouth, yet has wonderful reach and penetration of baked apple, nut oil, marzipan, slate and vanilla flavors. Really finely balanced, this shows a lot less overt sweetness than the typical young Prum Spatlese.

Exotic bouquet of passion fruit and mango, lifted by fine floral nuances. The wine's luscious peach pit flavor and velvety texture are given shape and verve by a finely chiseled minerality. Dense yet airy, this spatlese boasts great refinement and stunning length. One of the stars of the vintage.
