Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Riesling Spätlese Ürziger Würzgarten 2003

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Fresh aromas of pears and talcum powder can be discerned in the nose of the 2003 Riesling Kabinett Erdener Treppchen. Light to medium-bodied and tangy, it offers a bright, zesty character with lively mineral flavors. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

The monks of Himmerod built the wine-cellar at that time and in 1509 the estate you can admire today. In 1804, after the secularization by Napoleon, our family could acquire the Wine Estate in Paris. Robert Eymael leads since 1994 the Wine Estate. Joke and humor paired with a quality-conscious individualism, describe his philosophy, which reflects itself in the inimitable style of its Riesling wines. Read less

The complex 2003 Riesling Auslese Erdener Treppchen** boasts a nose of honeysuckle blossoms. Medium-bodied, supple, and silky-textured, it exhibits an expressive flavor profile composed of red fruits, pears, and spices. In addition, this luscious, pure wine possesses a long, fruit-filled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2018.

Spicy and lively, this creamy, red berry and citrus-infused white remains focused and tangy through the finish. It goes for freshness over concentration. Drink now through 2015.

A juicy, tangy version, featuring crunchy apple, peach and jellied lime notes. Rich and balanced, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Hard not to enjoy this now. Drink now through 2022.

Sassafras, oils, licorice and brown spices are the aromatic themes, while pineapple and lime add juiciness on the palate to a Kabinett so lively and light you'll swear it can't be from 2003. Salt, slate and citrus in abundance in the finish.

With its honeyed and floral tropical fruit flavors, this shows a lot of sweetness right now. Its latent complexity is apparent, but this will need time in the cellar to settle down and reveal its true depth.

Aromas of tangerine, sassafras and toasted nuts. Sizzlingly bright and spicy on the palate, with juicy citricity but also a hint of creaminess. This comes from a small, ungrafted section near Pralat that was not disturbed during the general replanting of Treppchen. Finishes bright and long. 1 star.
