Joel Gott Zinfandel 2016

External Review by We Speak Wine:

TASTING NOTES: Our 2016 California Zinfandel has aromas of ripe blackberries, tea and sandalwood. On the palate, flavors of black cherries and vanilla are followed by a smooth mid-palate with round, concentrated flavors of caramel and cola, and a long finish with hints of spice. WINEGROWING NOTES: The larger part of this blend is sourced from Amador and Lodi where small fruit clusters from decades-old, head-trained vines give the wine its intense concentration. Located within the northeastern hills of the Lodi appellation, loose, stony soil from Borden Ranch allows for strong vine growth, and adds great concentration to the wine. Fruit from Sonoma adds spice and gives the wine its structure and tannins. Sourcing from these varied regions across California helps to create and elegant and well-balanced wine. WINEMAKING NOTES: After fermentation, the wine was aged in 20% new American oak and 80% 2-year-old French oak. ALCOHOL: 14.4%

TASTING NOTES: The 2015 Joel Gott California Zinfandel has aromas of cherry cola, ripe plum, vanilla, black tea and sweet spices. On the palate, sweet cherry flavors are followed by a juicy mid-palate with smooth tannins and long, delicate finish. WINEGROWING NOTES: Across California, the 2015 growing season started with early bud break followed by a cool spring and moderate summer temperatures. Late summer heat waves created one of the shortest growing seasons to date, causing fruit to be picked early and harvest to end in September. Small fruit clusters from decades-old, head-trained vines in Lodi and Amador give the wine its intense concentration. Loose, stony soil from the newly sourced Borden Ranch AVA allows for strong vine growth, and also adds great concentration to the wine. Fruit from Mendocino adds spice and red fruit flavors, while fruit from Lake County adds minerality and richness. Sourcing from these varied regions across California helps to create an elegant and well-balanced wine. WINEMAKING NOTES: After fermentation, the wine was aged in 20% new American oak and 80% 2-year-old French oak. BARREL: 20% new American oak - 80% 2-year-old French oak ALCOHOL: 14.4%

CaliforniaJoel Gott Zinfandel is a rare red wine gem that has steadily built a following over its first 17 vintages. This Zinfandel is considered by some "the poor man's Turley" because of its astonishing quality-to-price ratio. Joel Gott was born into a family of winemakers. His grandfather was winemaker and president of Inglenook in the '60s and 70's; his father founded Montevina; his wife Sarah has made wines for Joseph Phelps and now makes Joel Gott wines; and Joel has made some pretty good wines himself! In addition to Joel's uncanny blending ability, he has privileged access to many of the best and as yet undiscovered fruit sources in the Napa Valley. Joel Gott wines are therefore remarkable values, offering gobs of classic California fruit, good structure and excellent balance. "A serious expression of the Zinfandel grape. Aromas of cranberry jam, strawberry essence and currant reveal themselves in complex layers. The wine is round and ripe but has a firm structure. The finish seems to last forever." - 2017 Ultimate Wine Challenge.June/2017When Joel is not making great wine, he manages at least four other businesses, including the Palisades Market in Calistoga and Napa Valley's hottest burger stand, Taylor's Refresher, where Robert Parker enjoyed one of his "Most Memorable Meals." If you haven't had the pleasure of trying one of Joel's wines, now's the time to jump aboard! For this vintage of Joel Gott Zinfandel, dry-farmed, old-head-trained vines in Lodi and Amador produced dark, intense, structured fruit, while fruit from the Napa Valley harvest added power and complexity. The cooler climates of Dry Creek, Mendocino and Russian River produced fruit with classic, peppery Zinfandel aromatics, good acidity and great fruit flavors. Bringing together fruit from these varied regions helped to create a balanced Zinfandel. The wine is a deep ruby/purple in color with a vibrant nose of sweet cherries, red plums, blackberries and vanilla spice. Medium/full in body, it is bright and assertive with soft tannins and bold flavors of black cherries, raspberries, plums, maple and spice. Aged for 10 months in 30% new American oak, 70% 2- and 4-year-old French oak barrels. Well structured and complex, it offers beautiful balance and a long, smooth finish.Enjoy Joel Gott Zinfandel with your Thanksgiving turkey, or with roast chicken, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and cheeses.

Vintage: 2013 02/09/2016

TASTING NOTES: The 2013 California Zinfandel has aromas of roasted plum and black cherries with notes of vanilla and spice. On the palate, rich fruit flavors and sweet tannins are followed by a delicate, balanced finish. WINEGROWING NOTES: Across California, 2013 was an exceptional vintage with more complexity and concen- tration than past vintages. Moderate summer temperatures on the heels of a warm, dry spring allowed the fruit to evenly ripen and develop. The largest component of the blend for this vintage comes from decades-old, head-trained vines in Lodi, which produce small clusters, giving the wine its intense color and concentration. Fruit from both the Russian River and Dry Creek Valleys produced smaller than average clusters, adding even more concentration and giving the wine complex fruit flavors. The Shenandoah Valley appellation provides the wine with its red fruit and spice characteristics for which the Zinfandel varietal is known. Blended, the various appellations produce a balanced, yet jammy and rich, Zinfandel. BARREL: 25% new American oak ALCOHOL: 14.4%
