- Jean-Marc Joblot describes 2005 as a reference quality vintage. We had average yields but absolutely superb quality that exploded with flavor when you tasted the grapes we were picking. The harvest began on the 7th of September and we harvested until the 16th under ideal conditions. The cleanliness of the grapes is perhaps the best that I have ever seen and we essentially did no sorting save for the odd leaf or insect. Perhaps more importantly was the homogeneity of the ripeness. It didn't matter whether you tasted from outside or inside the clusters, the berries were all perfectly ripe with read more...blue/black centers. I believe this mainly came from the fact that we had lots of light during the growing season and not so much heat and as such, it didn't burn up the acidities. Quantities were acceptable if not really low at 38 to 43 hl/ha in red and around 60 hl/ha in white with alcohols in the 13.2 to 13.3% area and ideal acidities. I love this vintage and believe it to be superior to 1990 plus we'll see 20 year plus longevities with many of the reds. It's a great vintage and I will lay down ample amounts for the future. I have to agree with Joblot that his 2005s are flat out amazing. I have been following the wines since the last 1980s and while I have not always admired the results in some vintages, 2005 is without question the best vintage that I have ever seen for the Joblot wines. (Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, D.C.). This too is quite expressive with a rich mix of dark pinot fruit and more obvious earth influence that complements the seriously intense and admirably concentrated flavors that are underpinned by a bit more structure and terrific length. This will require time before it's completely ready to reveal its full potential. (hide)
