- Jean-Marc Joblot reports that as late as August 20th, I thought 2004 was going to be a complete disaster. We had had a cool and rainy summer with retarded maturation levels, green tannins and low sugars. We had dropped a lot of fruit to try and help the vines ripen what remained but it didn't seem to be doing much good. Thankfully, we had great weather from that day forward and we began picking the reds on September 15th and the whites on September 25th. We obtained good if not great phenolic ripeness but the sugars were solid at between 12.8 and 13.2% and no rot. Yields came in between 35 to 38 hl/ha read more...and there was a lot of malic acid, which gave us long and slow malos. For me, 2004 is like 1988 but riper and it's certainly better than 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998. (Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, D.C.). Reds: This is a good deal bigger and more serious with earthy and slightly rustic briar and a mix of red and black pinot fruit aromas that complement the moderately concentrated yet supple flavors and offer good power and plenty of backend persistence. Good stuff with mid-term cellar potential. (hide)
