What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

2004 JM Cellars Columbia Valley Cuvee. Wine Advocate 172, Aug. 2007 The 2004 Columbia Valley Cuvee is purple-colored with aromas of cedar, spice box, clove, cranberry, cassis, and black currants. This is followed by a supple-textured wine with sweet fruit, a sense of elegance, and enough structure to evolve for 3 to 4 years. Drink this Bordeaux look-alike through 2024.

Reviews

I just drank my last bottle of the 2004 Cuvee (I had three we picked up after one of John's distributor returned several cases when the distributor went out of business). I have to say this is my favorite year for all the Cuvee's I have tasted from JM (2004 - 2007). There are few of these left out there, and what I like the most about it is the sweet, nectar or honey aftertaste. This Cuvee doesn't linger too long on the palette, but its purple hue, delicate sweetness, and soft, floral perfume are unexpected (to me at least) in a red like this.

The 2004 vintage "Cuvee" reveals supple tannins, juicy cherry and blackberry flavors and aromas and a long, lingering finish.
The "right bank" Bordeaux blend is composed of 45% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc, from a few outstanding Columbia Valley vineyards. The majority of the fruit sourced for this vintage of "Cuvee" (75%) is from rising star vineyard Stillwater Creek on the Royal Slope. Recommended cellaring, 5 - 7 years.
