Jim Barry Wines the Armagh Clare Valley Shiraz 2013

Member Review by Downingj:

High powered palate with flavors of blackberry and plum, pepper and spice. Fine tannins are well integrated. Delicious.

An extraordinary concentration, early signs of ageing but with fruit to last another 15-20 years... a very unusual mix of indian spices (Star anis, cloves, white and black pepper) licorice, with prun-like aromatics... it is a serious wine for wine lovers... 97/100

I had the pleasure of drinking this wine with its maker Peter Barry at his 50th Birthday in 2009. Finally I waited long enough to try a 98 past its 10th Birthday. Armagh is a single vinyard wine from the Northern end of Clare. As a young wine is is usually too tannic with explosive fruit to drink. The top Armagh vintages require at least 10 years to be in a good mood for drinking. There is a really strong backbone of excellent Clare fruit which has still got an excellent blackcurrent flavour, but the wine is now starting to develop nice secondary flavours from the Oak and fruit integration and chocolate and almost nutty falour is beginning to come through Excellent example of the wine Pete is trying to make.

Clare shiraz at its richest and most concentrated. This may already have reached its peak. Sweet fruit with a little portiness poking thru, oak plays a part (american) in adding some coconut to the sweet cherry and bitter chocolate characters.

Amazingly, the 2002 Shiraz The Armagh is even better than the McRae Wood. This cuvee is aged 14 months in both French and American oak, and is bottled without filtration. The inky/purple-colored 2002 The Armagh boasts notes of scorched earth, chocola... Robert Parker. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2002 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh 750ml

Dense purple-red; absolutely stuffed with blackberry, prune, dark chocolate and plum fruit intermingling with mocha/vanilla oak; gets away with the preposterous alcohol; very long finish. James Halliday. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2002 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh 750ml

($120) Saturated bright ruby. Pungent, perfumed nose dominated by chocolate, espresso and mint. Superripe and thick but distinctly porty, with some greenness lurking beneath its wave of fruit. Impressively sweet and liqueur-like, conveying an impress... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2001 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh 750ml

A jazzy mouthful, filled with personality, shading its bright plum and blackberry with hints of pepper and herbs, picking up a nice bay leaf note on the generous, firm-textured finish. A hummer already. Best after 2000. 2,500 cases made. -HS Wine Spectator. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 1996 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh 750ml
