Jim Barry 'The Lodge Hill' Shiraz 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very floral and licorice scented when first poured from the bottle, this gains a low base of plummy fruit, lots of cracked pepper character and some lovely herbal suggestions all wrapped in a vanilla gauze. rather lighter on the palate than expected here, one finds lots of slightly tart red raspberry and cherry fruits supported by gently ripe tannins and solid acidity. There’s attractive tension in the mouth with good clarity to the fruit and fine structural detail though this is a bit on the simple side. Things get a bit more interesting on the backend and through the finish where the herbal accents of the nose become more apparent and contribute some additional complexity and the finish is quite long with very fine tart cherry and strawberry top fruits. Not a wine that’s going to really grab your attention but one you’ll be very happy drinking for the rest of the evening. The term well behaved springs to mind. 90pts

Bold but smooth with big blackberry fruit, spice, earth, chocolate on the nose and following well to the palate. This joined by sneaky perimeter flash of caramel, chewy tannins and a pop of acidity frame and drive a lengthy aftertaste. Drink or hold - 91 points - Paul

Wonderful wine making lends to the lavender floral notes with blueberry, plum and spice - mainly pepper with dusty tannins that finish slightly sweet. Rounded tannins are just chewy enough to give texture and meld with mineraly acidity to drive a medium length aftertaste. Drink now - Paul 91 points

Acidic little beast...With that many awards on the side of the bottle, I was hoping it would be better blended. Disappointing. With a little time breathing, it became more tolerable, preventing it from being poured down the drain,

A lighter style Shiraz that blossoms. Less peppery but yummy.

Robust fruit on the nose with aromas of plum and black cherries alongside traces of mint, vanilla, and spice. Fairly fruit forward on the palate but still with a nice level of complexity from the other flavors. Full bodied with fine, firm tannins. Lengthy finish.

Displays lifted notes of pepper spice, nutmeg and caraway seed with lashings of boysenberry mixed with spearmint. The palate is medium bodied and seamless with an abundance of choc-mint, raspberries and black cherries, all wrapped up in integrated, well seasoned oak.
