Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra the Cover Drive 2005
This wine shows inky, deep red colour, with a nose of black cherry, briary fruit and dark chocolate. The palate is medium to full bodied, with ripe, black cherry and cassis fruit, subtle integrated vanillin oak with mocha richness. The fine grained, talcy soft tannins support a lingering finish. As with previous releases of ‘The Cover Drive’, the wine displays harmonious balance and can be enjoyed now or will reward cellaring for 2-3 years. Serve with hearty beef casserole or rack of lamb.
The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry. He was the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the company is headed by Jim’s second son Peter, who took over from his father as Managing Director.
Just opened a bottle this weekend with some steak sandwiches - delicious. Give it a little air for the flavor, acidity, and tannin to come into balance and you won't be disappointed. Dark fruit flavors up front with a hint of licorice. Smooth finsh
This is what I would call a "crowd pleaser" cab. Nice fruit and soft tannins, and not too challenging. If you are looking for a big beefy cab, this isn't it. But it is a very nicely balanced, fruit-forward cab with lots of cherry and just a little oak.
