What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

Shiraz: Robert Parker 98 points "One of the most colossal wines in all of my tastings was Jim Barry's 2004 Shiraz The Armagh, a 100% Shiraz aged 16 months in French and American oak. It is an opaque purple-hued, super-intense effort displaying great precision and richness. Notes of melted asphalt, acacia flowers, blueberries, blackberries, charcoal, and espresso roast emerge from this full, dense, opulent Shiraz. The finish lasts for over 45 seconds. This is a great example of one of the icons of Australian Shiraz."

WS 92 (9/2007): Bright and jazzy, with a red pepper edge to the cherry, green olive and spice flavors. The harmonious flavors linger against very fine tannins and lively acidity on the long finish. Drink now through 2014. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 75 cases imported.

IWC 93 (10/2007): Glass-staining violet. A huge and strikingly pungent bouquet of blackcurrant, kirsch, candied licorice, chocolate, vanilla bean, flowers and incense. Deep and sweet, with impressively concentrated cherry and dark berry flavors bordering on liqueur-like but firmed by youthful tannins and brightened by sneaky minerality. Black cherry preserve, candied violet and mocha qualities build on the expansive, long finish, utterly saturating the palate. Surprisingly precise for a wine with such concentration and built to last.

The 2004 Armagh is black-purple in color. It displays a nose of lifted, aromatic, blueberry/blackberry cassis, cedary oak, spice and complex, underlying savory characters. The palate is huge and dense, with fully integrated oak, yet still featuring complex fruits of plum, blackcurrant, blackberry andblack cherry. It shows deep, brooding consistency, with the flavor and texture of chocolate mudcake. This wine is ideal for long term cellaring. It is suggested that the wine is allowed to breathe a minimum of two hours before beingconsumed to fully appreciate the distinctive flavors and aromas.
