Jelu’s 2009 Syrah Zonda Valley spent 6 months in French and American oak. Notions of spice box, mint, game, and blueberry inform the nose of a supple, savory, sweetly-fruited, friendly wine that offers outstanding value. Drink this nicely proportioned effort over the next 3–4 years.

The dry, rocky, and sandy soil of the Zonda Valley accompanied by the “Zonda Winds,” very similar to Hermitage in the Northern Rhone Valley of France, allows these grapes to fully ripen and explode with dark fruit flavors. The deep and broad fruits are balanced and the smooth tannins make this Syrah very enjoyable and leave you wishing the bottle was larger. The addition of 6–8% Viognier is another stylistic approach reminiscent of Hermitage and increases the lush and vivacious aromatics. Although great on its own, it pairs well with any dry-rubbed meat (typical of Argentina), dense cheeses and thoughtful introspection.

The Jelu winery, located in the San Juan region of Argentina, is located at an elevation of 900 feet. "Jelu" means "sun" in the native language, and these grapes do in fact achieve maximum ripeness from all the hot Argentine sun they get. Blackberry fruit, pepper, and great underlying minerality make this a tasty and crowd-pleasing wine.
