Jelly Jar Barbera Lake County 2010

Member Review by Mary Margaret McCamic:

A wine quite fruitier than I usually tend to go, but it was fun. This Barbera sees some new French oak, and it's not light-bodied or acidic, as some examples, say, from Italy, can be. This is California Barbera, ripe and round, with ripe cherry fruit and sweet spice. Shared it with some friends over rich, braised pheasant and dogs running around in the backyard.

A shared dream of husband and wife team, Andy and Shannon Pestoni, Jelly Jar marks a return to early California winemaking, when Italian immigrants crafted food-friendly wines to enjoy around the family table – most often out of jelly jars. Long before Napa Valley became the wine destination we know today, these winemakers planted backyard vineyards and enlisted family members to harvest and crush grapes. As a fourth-generation winemaker, whose roots run deep in the Napa Valley, Andy inherited his ancestors’ love of wine and crafts Jelly Jar with profound understanding. He knows how to enhance the unique character of grapes from single vineyard sites he has hand-chosen. And like the wines from the turn of the century, Jelly Jar is a true family endeavor. Andy and Shannon work together in every aspect of production from start to finish. Raise a glass of Jelly Jar – a delicious, food-friendly, family-crafted wine to be shared with family and friends. Fruity and bright. Moderate, round tanins. Very smooth with an easy, moderate finish. A little thicker would be better.
