What to Expect

Chablis is a region of France's Burgundy region responsible for some of the most distinctive expressions of the Chardonnay grape. On the limestone rich soils of the area, Chardonnay produces wines that can be steely, yet rich with orchard fruits and mineral tones. Unlike the typical white Burgundy, most Chablis sees little or no new oak which allows the grape to express itself with a purity that barrel aging can obscure. Often quite reticent in their youth, Chablis may require several years of ageing in order to be able to fully express the depth and richness it keeps in reserve.

Winemakers Notes

The domaine of Jean-Marc Brocard began as just one hectare, a gift from his father-in-law when he married into a winegrowing family. He has since expanded to 120 hectares, and is widely recognised as one of Chablis’ leading producers. The approach is one of minimal intervention in both vineyard and winery: cultivation is practically organic, with ploughing in place of herbicides, predators instead of pesticides, manure rather than fertiliser, and as little spraying as the grapes’ health requires. No oak is used in the winery, so the results are pure, unadorned expressions of the great read more...chalk slopes of Chablis. Situated in the largest, and arguably the greatest, of the grands crus, these thirty-year-old vines have a southern exposure and grow on Kimmeridgian soil: alternating layers of limestone and clay/marl. Viticulture is chemical-free. Grapes were pneumatically pressed before fermentation in stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation was completed, and 10% of the wine was aged in one-year-old French oak. This Grand Cru is complex yet very refined, showing some mineral, smoke, flint, lemon and a touch of honeyed complexity. It is full-bodied and layered with exquisite flavours and a long finish.    (hide)
