Jean-Luc Colombo Hermitage le Rouet Blanc 2012

External Review by Palm Bay International:

Hermitage Le Rouet Blanc 2012 - 92 points, Vinous/ Light, bright yellow-gold. The nose offers an array of ripe orchard and pit fruit aromas, along with hints of dried fig, beeswax and fennel. Chewy and broad on the palate, offering vibrant white peach and bitter pear skin flavors with a bracing jolt of orange zest. Shows very good clarity and cut on the incisive finish, which leaves a subtle floral note behind.

Hailed as the winemaking wizard of the Rhône, Jean-Luc Colombo has achieved a high-profile international reputation for making innovative wines that are original, memorable and bursting with personality. Despite a resolute aversion to change in the Cornas region, Colombo has brazenly introduced innovative methods in his vineyards and throughout the production process based on a respect for nature and his fundamental belief that good wine is the culmination of three key elements: terroir, human endeavor and modern winemaking techniques. The result? A more accessible style of Rhône Valley wines, reflecting an exuberance of fruit and depth of expression and showcasing the full potential of the Syrah grape when grown in the unique terroir of Cornas. Through his intense dedication, Colombo has brought the wines of Cornas into the international limelight. The company now embraces wines representing major appellations of the Rhône Valley as well as the Languedoc and Roussillon regions of southern France. Production Area Rhone Valley, France Grapes grow on 50-year-old vines growing on the famous granitic hill of Hermitage. All work in the vineyards is done manually and without the use of pesticides or irrigation, respecting the local environment. Grape Varieties 70% Marsanne; 30% Roussanne Vinification Fermentation takes place at low temperatures of 54-55°F for 1-1.5 months. The wine is stirred with the lees once a week for 3 months after fermentation. 100% malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine is then aged for two years in two-, three- and four-year-old oak barrels. Color Lovely gold Bouquet Reflects the aromatic richness, finesse and complexity of a great Hermitage with notes of candied fruit and delicate white flowers. Taste A full-bodied wine with rich, round flavors of honey finishing with notes of soft spices and beeswax. Alcohol 13.5% Serving Suggestions Excellent with seafood dishes such as lobster, shellfish and buttery sole. Also pairs well with light appetizers, roasted poultry and salads.
