Modestly saturated medium red color. Quickly developing, rather rustic aromas of leather, herbs, game and coffee. Possesses decent sweetness and concentration - a triumph in this thoroughly miserable vintage in the Northern Rhône Valley. Finishes with light, slightly tongue-drying tannins. This was 11% potential alcohol chaptalized to about 12% in the bottle.
Complex while firm and crisp in style, this Rhône red is a well-rounded package, cascading with pretty game, smoke and toasted notes, showing supple tannins and a succulent, clean and intense finish. Drink now through 2003.
Saturated, deep ruby-red. Aromatic, pure aromas of cassis, mocha, iris and Cuban tobacco. Supple and fruity, with the Burgundian floral aspect shown by so many Nothern Rhône wines from this vintage. Very fresh and juicy; pure and sharply delineated. Not at all a southern style of Syrah. A wine with excellent thrust but not a particularly powerful style of Hermitage. Very long, violety aftertaste. This should be slower to close down than the '95.
The 1998 Hermitage rouge is a tannic, backward, large-scaled, dense ruby/purple-colored wine with high tannin, sensational extract, and formidable power and length. It needs 5-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.
Exciting. Thick, rich texture with elegant, fresh blackberry flavors. Displays wonderful ripe fruit, and it takes a dig into the mineral soil to extract a balanced whole with an earthy subtext. Full-bodied, with a tannic but balanced and powerful finish.
Rich and ripe, full-bodied, with great sweet fruit character. Lovely, thick, attractive (almost like a dessert wine), with mineral but also plum character, blackberries, fresh figs, smoke and toasted notes. Kicks in with good intensity on the finish. Drink now through 2010.
Tasting through the component parts of the 2001 Hermitage reveals what should be an outstanding wine with a Burgundian-like finesse. The most elegant component emanates from Les Beaumes and Pelia, and the denser, thicker wines from Meal, l'Ermite, and Bessards. The wine will possess a dense ruby/purple color in addition to plenty of sweet cassis fruit, medium body, noticeably high tannin, and gorgeous purity as well as symmetry. It will be built along the lines of the 1996 rather than the 2000 or 1999.
