Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 1990
Medium ruby. Black cherry, licorice, pepper and tar on the nose. Very dry but classy and aromatic, with currant fruit complicated by licorice, pepper, leather and fresh herbs. Rather bracing for a young Chave wine, and difficult to taste after the 2003, but the wine's aromatic persistence suggests it will reward aging. Late notes of pepper and gunflint.
The Chave family have been involved in wine making in the northern Rhone valley since 1481. Jean-Louis Chave is the current boss and an exponent of organic viticulture. The Domaine is mainly in Hermitage but also operates as a negociant in other AOC's although he has bought some plots inb Saint-Joseph.
Another Wow wine. Classic hermitage hose- warn cherry/raspberry nose with bacon and herbs. Ripe and delicious on the palate with the grace that was described as Chave-ness. Seems to have a lot still in reserve.
