Winemaker's Notes:

The Chave family has been growing grapes at Hermitage since 1481. They use low yeilding vines (average age 60 years) and a late harvest to produce the ripest fruit, and there is virtually no intervention in the winemaking and bottling with no filtration.

Jean-Louis Chave is the current boss and an exponent of organic viticulture. The Domaine is mainly in Hermitage but also operates as a negociant in other AOC's although he has bought some plots inb Saint-Joseph.

This is very animale and agressively smokey in the glass with a core of black earthy fruit lurking underneath. Slowly notes of parsley root and a deeply imbedded green streak emerge from the dense cocoa tinged core. Offering excellent integration on the palate, this is a smaller scaled Chave more in line with vintages like 1995 and 1985 than some of the better endowed years. The mineral note that appears on entry drapes across the palate and offers contrast to the dried strawberry fruit that gains sweetness with air. Lovely and faceted if low amplitude at this point, the fruit has a mouthwatering stoniness to it and a lovely suggestion of gingerbread emerges with time. This could use another 3-5 years to really peak but has begun to show well already 92pts
