Jaume Serra Cava Semi Seco NV

Winemaker's Notes:

Cristalino is always a solid go-to Cava. This brut is round, slightly yeasty and shows citrus aromas that veer toward lemon-lime. The palate is healthy and clean, with a narrow set of citrus and apple flavors. Fairly full and long on the finish, which makes the whole package more than worthwhile given the cost.

Lightly floral on the nose with hints of white flowers over gentle apple fruit with a squirt of lime, simple but fresh. In the mouth this shows off lovely citrus fruit over a nice integrated base of yeasty complexity. Rather light and distinctly fresh in the mouth, this is easy to drink and finishes on the dry side with refreshing dried citrus and mineral flavors. 86pts

Dusty on the nose and slightly vegetal, with some sweet herbal elements and a bit of gum. Not terribly effervescent and rather vinous, making this easy to drink. It’s got a touch of sweetness, but that is well balanced by the wine’s acidity which also supports the slightly candied strawberry/cherry/watermelon fruit on the mid-palate. The finish is clean and brisk if on the short side. This is a fun wine, fruity and easy to drink. 85pts

Dark rum and strawberries in the nose. Nice dry body with delicate herbal notes, nice fruit. A little bit metallic on the finish. Pretty nice.

This is a wonderfully dry cava that is crisp and refreshing. This is not a buttery oaky sparkler.

The best value I've ever found in a sparkling wine to date!! I can't believe the complexity I experience in this wine given its low price point. Pale yellow with just a hint of green. Clean, fresh, and fruity but with unexpected depth coming from yeasty/bread-like notes and something more cutting yet savoury (like graphite or nut skins). Very dry. An incredible value.

Can't do much better for $7 in a sparkler. Better choice than their regular brut. Good red fruit & minerality.

Refreshing Brut Nature. Distinct lemon and citrus flavours, though not enough in the way of a "peel" texture for me. Went very well with pancakes and real Canadian maple syrup though!

I absolutely love this cava! Smooth, well rounded and it tastes more expensive than it is. Beautifully bubbly and not so heavy on apple like so many of the cheaper bubblies. Great for everyday type drinking

Very dry. Very sparkly. Bitter, a bit grassy.

A sophisticated sparkler for under $8.99? Seems unlikely, but right from the start, this release of Cristalino shows off a bright green gold color and persistent, tiny bubbles. Then the toast of the aroma follows, as does the figgy richness of flavor. It’s a big, bold wine, with scents of spring blossoms, woodier elements of cinnamon, spice and herb aspects of sage and witch hazel. The finishing savor of pie crust raises it out of the realm of most cheap sparklers, the dry roasted almond flavors keep it firmly in Spain.

A crisp, very simple nonvintage cava from the Penedès region southwest of Barcelona. Perfect for basic sipping or as a blend in a mimosa or another champagne cocktail. By itself you will appreciate the mild bubble bead — courtesy of 18 to 24 months of bottle aging — and the mellow green-apple flavor. For eight dollars, you can’t complain.

A sophisticated sparkler, this is a big, bold wine, with scents of spring blossoms, of cinnamon, spice and of sage, with a dry roasted almond flavor that keeps it firmly in Spain. Chill this for croquetas de bacalao.

Light bodied. Moderate acidity. Mild fruit. Citrus, earth, minerals, peach. Crisp balanced between stone fruits and citrusy acidity, this offers nice light summertime drinking.

A full-flavored, assertive Spanish sparkler that starts with toasty, spicy aromas, then wraps its nutty, fruity flavors in a rich texture. Lingers nicely on the finish, too. Lots of character for this price range.

If you like a toasty, dry bubbly, Cristalino is a nice choice given the affordable price. Burnt bread notes mix with vanilla liqueur and green apples on the nose. The palate is bracingly dry and crisp, with lemon and petrol notes. The bead is aggressive, but the back palate nice and the finish dry, with dusty cinnamon apple notes.

There’s plenty of enjoyment in this modestly priced wine, which has dusty, earthy aromas and just the slightest hint of citrus and melon. It’s very dry and faintly fruity. Has a bit of a scouring quality from high acidity, and it’s rough, but it’s exceptionally clean and brisk.
