Januik Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

High toned and a bit floral on the nose with a little herb adding detail to the black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. This is a bit oily and really quite floral and perfumed on the nose. Youthful purple and plummy fruit in the mouth shows an interesting blend of freshly crushed fruit and clean oaky flavor with a hint of richness. Wood tannins add their heft on the backend where the power and elegance sort of slide out from under the blanket of youthful fruit that is the mid-palate. An exclamation point of a wine. This is long and a bit edgy in need of some time in the cellar. 92pts

Januik Winery:
Family-owned. Artisan winemaking. Acclaimed Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. You’ve heard dozens of wineries make these claims, and while these statements are certainly true of Januik wines, they seem a little cliché too. Cola to start, moving through a mineral mid palate, and finishing on licorice. Firm tannins, displaying its youth - give it time to age.

Plush and open-textured, bursting with juicy black currant and cherry fruit, layering hints of mint, dill and mocha as the finish lingers intensely. Best from 2016 through 2021.

A tight, metallic streak runs vertically through this Cabernet. Deep cassis fruit, juicy acids and the mineral/metal signature of the vineyard combine in a well-structured wine with an extended finish.

More elegant and seamless (which is a hallmark of the vineyard) the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval Vineyard gives up sweet currants and black raspberry styled fruits, flowers, and hints of toast to go with a seamless, pure, elegant and medium to full-bodied feel on the palate. Made from 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it’s a gorgeous bottle of wine that will evolve gracefully for 12–15 years.
