Jansz Pipers River Brut Premium Original Presentation Box Chardonnay Australia 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

In the northeast corner of Australia's southern island state is a wine region so perfect for creating sparkling wine that it has captured the interest of world-renowned Champagne houses such as Louis Roederer of Reims, France, who believed that the climate of the area was ideal for the production of finely structured Méthode Champenoise and helped establish the vineyard that would become Jansz Tasmania. The Hill Smith family shared the belief and purchased Jansz from Pipers Brook Vineyard in 1998. With a climate very close to that of Champagne, this region is known simply as 'Sparkling Tasmania'. The Jansz vineyards lie in the Tamar Valley at the heart of Tasmania’s Pipers River region - the very centre of 'Sparkling Tasmania'. Jansz Tasmania has evolved to become known as the benchmark Australian sparkling wine and for the fourth time in six years, Jansz Tasmania Premium Vintage Cuvée has been chosen as the Nation’s celebratory wine - an unprecedented achievement. Attention to detail and diligence in the vineyard, with crop thinning and disease monitoring, were essential to great winemaking in vintage 2004. Every block from the Jansz vineyard was hand-harvested separately, and kept in individual batches through the year. Gentle handling, select barrel fermentation and complex assemblage blending resulted in a wonderful Jansz Vintage Cuvée. Four years ageing on yeast lees after the secondary fermentation gives classical yeast complexity for the final wine. The wine is pale gold in colour with a layered nose showing gorgeous yeast ageing, toast, brioche and cream. The fruits are of quince and honeysuckle and classical chardonnay notes of ripe lemon. The wine displays a fine textured palate, which is elegant and balanced. The Chardonnay minerality & citrus zest supports the Pinot fruits of rosewater and strawberries and are enhanced by layers of fresh cream, yeasty brioche and a fine, velvet-like mousse.

The Jansz vineyards lie in the Tamar Valley at the heart of Tasmania’s Pipers River region - the very centre of 'Sparkling Tasmania'. With a mantle of red basalt soils and a cool climate moderated by the proximity of Bass Strait, the Jansz Tasmania vineyards are ideal for allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop the lingering acidity essential to produce a premium sparkling wine. Under the Hill Smith family guidance, Jansz Tasmania has evolved to become known as the benchmark Australian sparkling wine. For the fourth time in six years, Jansz Tasmania Premium Vintage Cuvée has been chosen as the Nation’s celebratory wine – an unprecedented achievement. Established in 1993 by the National Australia Day Council and Sydney International Wine Competition, this Award represents the “best of Australia”. To qualify for this honour, Jansz Tasmania Premium Vintage Cuvée 2004 first received the Sydney International Wine Competition trophy for “Best Australian Sparkling Wine – Apéritif Style” 2009.
