What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

Winemakers Notes

The domain was created in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. It actually covers 50 ha (122 acres) of vineyards distributed among different names: Châteauneuf of Pâpe, Coasts of the Rhone, Coasts of the Rhone Village, goal also Local wine of the Principality of Orange and Wine of table. This family exploitation takes the best cares in harvesting the grapes and in vinificating great wines in the most pure tradition.
The old vine Grenache cuvee, the Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin, ended up with about 15.1% alcohol, which is pretty high considering the vintage conditions. A wine of great finesse and elegance, read more...

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 124, January/February 2006 ($55) Bright ruby. Bright aromas of red berries and rhubarb, laced with floral notes of rose and violet. Supple and silky in the mouth, with tangy strawberry, raspberry and mocha flavors lingering through the gentle, sweet, very persistent finish. "My Burgundy," says Sabon.

RP: 95 ST: 93 Gorgeously sweet aromas of black raspberries, cherries, and flowers jump from the glass of the inky ruby/purple-colored 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin. With a structured mouthfeel, superb intensity, moderately high tannin, and a long, heady, concentrated finish, it will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 15+ years. Rating: 95-98 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger There are 1,200 cases of the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin. Essentially 100% Grenache from old vines and low yields, aged 70% in neutral wood foudres and 30% in old barrels, it tips the scales at 15.7% alcohol. This spectacular effort may be the finest Chaupin produced since the fabulous 1998 (which, by the way, offers terrific drinking). The dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 Chaupin offers attractive aromas of ripe raspberries intermixed with notions of orange marmalade, black currants, licorice, and smoke. Dense, full-bodied, fleshy flavors cascade over the palate along with a read more...
