The estatersquo;s 2009 Syrah Vernarsquo;s Vineyard is another of the more restrained wines in this lineup. It was fermented with 73% whole clusters, which may account for much of the complexity in the glass. Blackberries, olive tapenade and herbs are some of the notes that come together in this refined, polished Syrah. There is more than enough going on to provide at least a handful of years of highly rewarding drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2014ndash;2024.

Tasting Notes - The 2009 Santa Barbara County Syrah combines fruit from most of the vineyards we work with. More than a sum of its parts, it is dark and rich. This year's vintage has a little Petite Sirah blended in to add power and complexity. It is a serious wine that is approachable in its youth.
Black raspberry, black cherry, camphor, and subtle smoke jump from the glass of the Syrah Vernarsquo;s Vineyard. Complex aromatics are followed by a powerful, full-bodied wine with everything going the right way. The floral notes, the blue, black, and red fruits, the full-bodied mouthfeel, the unctuosity of the texture, and the rich, seamless integration of all the components are very special in this brilliant, full-throttle Syrah. It should be drunk over the next decade. The finish is 40 seconds plus. One of Santa Barbararsquo;s superstar wineries, Jaffurs has been on fire over recent vintages. Craig Jaffurs is certainly one of the pedal-to-the-metal, brilliant young winemakers in Santa Barbara, and his wines reflect his commitment to quality and dedication to such extraordinary grapes as Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, and Roussanne. Grenache is probably the second most difficult grape in the world to produce high quality wine from (with Nebbiolo first).
