Jaffurs Syrah Santa Barbara County Verna's 2009

External Review by NapaCabs.com:

WS 88 Pts - Supple and harmonious, delivering a pleasing mix of berry, spice, cedar and mineral flavors. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, this is complete and approachable, yet sure to gain. Tasting Notes - The 2009 Santa Barbara County Syrah combines fruit from most of the vineyards we work with. More than a sum of its parts, it is dark and rich. This year's vintage has a little Petite Sirah blended in to add power and complexity. It is a serious wine that is approachable in its youth.

Jaffurs Wine Cellars is dedicated to producing great Rhone varietal wines with a new-world independence. Our wines -Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Viognier, and Roussanne - are among the best in the county. Owner/winemaker Craig Jaffurs, produced his first professional wines during the 1994 harvest. All our wines are carefully made in small lots. Only about 3500 cases are produced each year - production is limited. We work closely with our growers in the Santa Ynez, Santa Rita, Los Alamos, and the Santa Maria growing regions. We limit vineyard yields and require that optimal farming practices are observed. All our wines are crushed, pressed, cellared and bottled in our Santa Barbara facility. Visit us for a glimpse of world class winemaking in the heart of the city. 2007 is our 14th harvest! In September of 2001 we completed construction of our new winery facility in the city of Santa Barbara. This modern, climate controlled facility allows us to make wine at a natural and careful pace. (Plus, it is only seven minutes from home!) We process all the fruit for our harvest here and the resulting wines show the benefits of this improved process. Come visit us at 819 E. Montecito Street (four blocks north of highway 101 off of Milpas Street). Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Black raspberry, black cherry, camphor, and subtle smoke jump from the glass of the Syrah Verna's Vineyard. Complex aromatics are followed by a powerful, full-bodied wine with everything going the right way. The floral notes, the blue, black, and red fruits, the full-bodied mouthfeel, the unctuosity of the texture, and the rich, seamless integration of all the components are very special in this brilliant, full-throttle Syrah. It should be drunk over the next decade. The finish is 40 seconds plus. One of Santa Barbara's superstar wineries, Jaffurs has been on fire over recent vintages. Craig Jaffurs is certainly one of the pedal-to-the-metal, brilliant young winemakers in Santa Barbara, and his wines reflect his commitment to quality and dedication to such extraordinary grapes as Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, and Roussanne. Grenache is probably the second most difficult grape in the world to produce high quality wine from (with Nebbiolo first).

Grown in the Los Alamos Valley, this Syrah is notable for richness. Itrsquo;s marked by peppery aromas, then turns spicy and huge in ripe blackberries, cassis and grilled teriaki beef, with complications from sweet, smoky oak. Simply delicious now, and will hold in the bottle for up to five years.

The estatersquo;s 2009 Syrah Vernarsquo;s Vineyard is another of the more restrained wines in this lineup. It was fermented with 73% whole clusters, which may account for much of the complexity in the glass. Blackberries, olive tapenade and herbs are some of the notes that come together in this refined, polished Syrah. There is more than enough going on to provide at least a handful of years of highly rewarding drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2014ndash;2024.
