In 1847, a young Bavarian immigrant called Johann Gramp missed the wine he used to drink in his home land. Instead of changing his habits, he decided to start growing grapes and attempt to make the wine himself. It was a way of adapting to a new country, but still staying true to his character. What he didn’t know was that when he planted the Barossa Valley’s first commercial vineyard along the banks of Jacob’s Creek, he was also planting the seeds of one of the most popular wine brands in the world that would be named after the waterway.  Today,  Jacob's Creek remains one of the most well known, trusted and enjoyed Australian wines around the world. It delivers fresh, elegant and great tasting wines that show true varietal character.  The philosophy of Jacob's Creek is to offer a range of wines that suit all occasions.  As a company, we concentrate on two key things: The first is continuous improvement. Every vintage we strive to improve the quality of our wines by refining our winemaking practices and continually gaining a greater understanding of our vineyards. The second is that in everything we do, at every step of the winemaking process, from the vineyards all the way through to your glass, we all work with the final destination in mind. We do it for the most important wine critic. You. Read less

Snowing some evolution on the nose this reveals hints of tobacco quite quickly followed by white floral notes, hints of cedar, some soil tones, a hint of rare beef and slightly stewy strawberry and black cherry fruits. Smooth in the mouth and quite polished with supple tannins and acidity that just barely peeks out through the delicate gauze of wild cherry and tobacco flavors. With a bit of air this gains additional freshness and reveals some more floral toned aromas in the mouth along with a lovely plummy/blackberry pie note that carries on the surprisingly long finish. the alcohol is just a hint noticeable on the finish but it doesn’t detract here. Rather refined and elegant. 87pts

Cedary, toasty and tarry on the nose with a deep base of worn leather, nuances of vanilla and white pepper and jammy cooked berry fruit. Nice and bright on entry with soft tannins and nicely supportive acidity that adds lift to the red plum and wild berry fruit here, but the oak is definitely the dominant flavor in the mouth. Toasty and heavy on the vanilla and spice. A little fruit pops on the finish, which is slightly sticky if smooth. Easy to drink, smooth and simple. 83pts

Smoky and subtle, with undercurrents of violet and vanilla supporting slightly minty black cherry and berry fruit. This is bright in the mouth and rather well balanced. A fresh, somewhat fruity character is layered over a bed of persistent cocoa, which is obvious but nicely restrained. Very much in a crowd-pleasing style, but exhibiting a restrained side as well. The fruit shows more wild cherry berry character on the finish, along with some toasty spice notes and a nice vanilla and coconut oak accent. 87 pts

Dry and woodsy on the nose with more wood than fruit. Sweet on entry with a loose, rather soft feel. There are nice sweet berry flavors accented with a touch of peppery spice but the tannins are drying and rob the mid-palate of its appeal. The finish is dry, woody and raw with light carob flavors. 78pts

Fairly gamy at first with a decidedly funky edge to the sweet, almost candied wild berry fruit. There are nuances of juniper, licorice, and canned black olives with an over-arching root beer-like sweetness. A touch flat though broad in the mouth, with a nice supple texture and a rather elegant mouthfeel for a Barossa Shiraz. There is nice fruit that emerges on the mid-palate with a note of cocoa and some of that canned olive aroma as well. This is almost surprisingly dry on the palate with a nice tobacco, nutty oak note on the finish. 88pts

Deep crimson color with purple hues around the rim and cranberry clarity against a clear sky. Aromas that start with licorice and heavy oak, plum, and with various summer berries, vanilla spice, and classic chocolate, sweet tobacco and freshly tanned leather. Flavors of blackberry, plum, subtle baking and cooking spices, cherry/licorice nuances, charred vanilla sweetness and a tinge of alcohol heat at the finish. The mouthfeel is dense at first, but as it takes on oxygen, it really smooths out and the palate becomes dry with a lingering chokecherry hint.

These wines always are better after laying down for a year or two...this is no exception. It has fleshed out, the plum and blueberry notes are fuller and the peppery notes and spice ride to a medium tannic finish accompanied by driving acidity. 89 points - drink now - Paul

Definitely lacking in complexity, but it's drinkable and for only $7 at the local grocery store I'll probably drink it again.

Great bouquet with the spices and oak and dark fruit, but disappointed on the palate. Overly acidic and tannic, which diminished any flavor in the wine. I would look for a more balanced expression of the grape in a Rhone.

Pretty impressive for the price, offering mint and cedar aromas followed by flavors of black cherry. There’s also a sturdy core of savory elements, like roasted meat and coffee. The wine is full bodied and velvety in texture, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now and over the next few years.

This Shiraz is a medium bodied wine with generous aromas of pepper, licorice and plum, leaving a soft textured finish on the palate. At our place this wine is enjoyed with great gusto alongside beef, lamb, chicken and amongst friends.

You can thank the weather for this seta, a clean, fresh, savory shiraz that shows the quality of the vintage in its fragrant fruit. This is not chippy and it's not pushed, just a simple, lovely red… for $13.

Vintage Conditions: Very dry conditions and cold weather prevailed during the winter of 2008. Budburst was around two weeks later than in the previous two seasons, returning to the timing of a normal season. Good rains finally arrived during early summer, which helped with vine canopy growth. A lengthy hot spell in late January and early February raised concerns of a repeat of the hot conditions from the previous vintage, but the robust Shiraz vines remained largely unaffected. The remainder of the growing period could be described as ?textbook?, with mild, dry conditions right through to harvest in mid March allowing for gradual, complete ripening with no disease pressure. The resulting Shiraz fruit was beautifully balanced, with attractive perfume and richness. Winemaking: Regular, systematic inspections of individual vineyards of Shiraz grapes with longstanding track records of outstanding quality, consistency and character enabled us to pinpoint optimal harvest dates. Our winemakers selected parcels of Shiraz fruit predominantly from the Barossa Valley floor for potential inclusion in the blend, based on the presence of distinctive regional characters, concentrated varietal flavours and fine tannin structures. After harvest the selected parcels were gently crushed and de-stemmed into a range of static fermenters and inoculated with a chosen strain of neutral yeast. During fermentation on skins, temperatures were carefully controlled between 18-28øC for periods up to 15 days to ensure optimal colour, tannin and flavour extraction from the skins. The key components were then drained and pressed into a range of carefully selected new and used French and American oak barrels, in which they underwent malolactic fermentation. These components were matured in oak for up to 20 months. Only those parcels which showed exceptional regional and varietal flavours, balanced structure and complexity were included in the final blend of Jacob?s Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz.
