Sweet, unctuous dessert wine will appeal to those who like apricots--and lots of them! Aromas of apricot, honey, and brown sugar. Flavors are apricot and clementine with a tingling acidity that keeps the wine from becoming too cloying. Sweeter than other vintages I've had, perhaps needs some more time in the bottle.

If you're skeptical that a French-American hybrid such as vidal can make a truly great wine, check this out. It first beckons with rosewater-marzipan scents; those lead into a mouthful of flavor as smooth and rich as a spoonful of creme brulee, the smoky minerality carried through the long finish by vibrant acidity. Pull it out for fresh goat cheeses and nuts, or a pear tart.

It's no surprise that excellent icewine is being made in the Niagara region of Canada, but this Vidal offering from Jackson-Triggs is a pleasure nonetheless. With its layered aromas and flavors of orange, apricot and honey lifted by crisp acidity, this is both approachable and collectible. A serious wine with a fun and flirty side.

This dark, golden wine is so ripe that the fruit has taken on a toasted edge, like apricots run under a broiler to caramelize their sweet flesh. Strong acidity and a savory wheaty flavor counters the intense sweetness, readying it for an apricot tart.
