Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine Proprietors' Reserve 2014

Member Review by drdebs:

Sweet, unctuous dessert wine will appeal to those who like apricots--and lots of them! Aromas of apricot, honey, and brown sugar. Flavors are apricot and clementine with a tingling acidity that keeps the wine from becoming too cloying. Sweeter than other vintages I've had, perhaps needs some more time in the bottle.

This is probably my favorite ice wine to date. It starts with a delicious acidic bite that balances the overall sweetness of the wine wonderfully. It's fruity and refreshing, but with enough complexity to be interesting, and the finish is smooth, almost creamy, leaving an aftertaste that's nearly as pleasant as drinking the wine itself.

This is a very sweet ice/dessert wine, with a bright yellowish color on the outside. It smells very fruity, with a distinctive flavor of apricot and peach. It has a very high level of sweetness of the flavor of fruit mentioned upon tasting, possibly more sweet than other vintage. Other than the dominant flavors of peach and apricot, green grapes and possibly honey are also tasted in the wine. One thing to mentioned is that this wine is a little more acidic than expected, with a medium body and a short or clean finish. This is a wine that should be recommended in private dining experience where chocolates are served as the primary dessert. Due to the sweetness, alcohol is hardly detected in the wine. Overall, it is a very good dessert wine that serves its purpose, especially for people who loves sweet fruity taste in their wine.

I adore this wine. Its true what others say about its low acidity. Fruit tree blossom on the nose. On the palate, dried tropical fruit (mostly mango) with some apple and golden raisins. Very long sticky finish with just a hint of butter. Expect to pay at least $20 U.S. for a 187 ml bottle but what the hey, they don't get much juice out of those frozen grapes

Some acidity, but not sufficient to balance the sweetness. Strong apple flavors with a fairly complex nutty finish. Not bad, but at $20 for a 1/4 bottle its overpriced.

Premium quality grapes flourish around Niagara-on-the-Lake because of the warming and cooling influences of Lake Ontario and its proximity to the Niagara Escarpment.

A creamy, honeyed version, with apricot, grapefruit and passion fruit notes in an elegant, balanced frame. Lovely finish. Drink now through 2008.

It's no surprise that excellent icewine is being made in the Niagara region of Canada, but this Vidal offering from Jackson-Triggs is a pleasure nonetheless. With its layered aromas and flavors of orange, apricot and honey lifted by crisp acidity, this is both approachable and collectible. A serious wine with a fun and flirty side.

If you're skeptical that a French-American hybrid such as vidal can make a truly great wine, check this out. It first beckons with rosewater-marzipan scents; those lead into a mouthful of flavor as smooth and rich as a spoonful of creme brulee, the smoky minerality carried through the long finish by vibrant acidity. Pull it out for fresh goat cheeses and nuts, or a pear tart.

This dark, golden wine is so ripe that the fruit has taken on a toasted edge, like apricots run under a broiler to caramelize their sweet flesh. Strong acidity and a savory wheaty flavor counters the intense sweetness, readying it for an apricot tart.
