Jaboulet Hermitage la Chapelle 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Legendary Rhône producer, Paul Jaboulet, was bought by the Frey family in January 2006 and is now undergoing a quality renaissance. The Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune (and previously owners of Ayala Champagne), have a history of investing in quality and are determined to restore the Jaboulet wines to their former glory. M. Frey hired a new general manager, a new vineyard manager and a new winemaker soon after taking control of Jaboulet, and brought in Denis Dubourdieu (owner of Château Reynon, and consultant to La Lagune) to help bring quality back to its previously high level. In order to do this, much of the old oak in the cellars was thrown out and almost 25,000 cases worth of wine was sold off in bulk as it wasn’t good enough to go into the revamped Jaboulet blends. In addition, about 72,000 bottles were tipped down the drain. This renewed emphasis on quality is to be seen in the 2004s that have gone to bottle since January 2006, and in the 2005s and 2006s. This red Hermitage is an intense ruby red, limpid and bright. It has a highly complex, distinguished nose, revealing the Syrah’s great finesse, with black fruits, sweet spices and, ultimately, finely woody. On the palate it is full and generous, with silky tannins and a very long finish.

Jaboulet's basic Crozes is a good value in '07, offering complex aromas of smoke, plum, black olive, horse sweat and cracked pepper framed by slightly coarse tannins. Turns firm on the finish, yet remains mouthwatering. Drink now-2017. - J.C. Focused, if a bit taut, with red currant and damson plum notes framed by a hint of cedar on the finish. Opaque purple. Captivating aromas of boysenberry, dark cherry, pepper, spices, cocoa powder and smoky minerality. Then intense and penetrating in the mouth, with brilliantly fresh dark berry and kirsch flavors lifted by notes of cinnamon and star anise. Finishes pungent and impressively long, with a palate-saturating whiplash of dark berry and spice flavors. This wine calls for at least decade of aging. Only 900 bottles were slated to be sent to the American importer. Sleek and primal now, with a beam of glistening raspberry and red currant fruit running over well integrated iron, black tea and roasted vanilla bean notes. Stays well-focused on the finish. If sticker shock doesnt send you running for the hills, this wine will be more than worth a go. Boldand rubbery now, with aromas of cedary spice, pepper and rich black fruits, this is a full, slightly fierce wine with enough creaminess and depth to bring it full circle. Roasted berry, herbs, spice and leather are all part of...
