J. Schram From Wine Spectator 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

A bold, rich style, with aromas of yeasty cinnamon roll and ripe golden apple, backing it up with refinement and structure. Flavors of Asian pear, with hints of lime and fresh ginger, linger awhile. Drink now through 2014. 1,017 cases made. T.F. Wine SpectatorFrom the inception of our efforts in 1965, we have sought to achieve the greatest elegance and individuality possible in our sparkling wines. J. Schram epitomizes our philosophy to create a wine in which no effort has been spared and no care has been omitted. This wine is a fine expression of American individuality and innovation. It is our very best Chardonnay-based Brut sparkling wine. Our eighty vineyard blocks in the Carneros and along the Pacific Coast are nurtured throughout the growing season. Cluster samples are pulled many times before the optimal pick date is selected. Complexity is gained through fermentation in both oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Some small lots undergo malolactic fermentation to enrich aromas and infuse creaminess on the palate. The wine is then aged in our historic Diamond Mountain caves for over five years.Dedicated to our founder of 1862, Jacob Schram, this special bottling has been a great success since its first release in 1992. J. Schram reflects Schramsbergs continuing role as a pioneer in world class sparkling wines. It is our nominee when you want an American statement of international excellence. J. Schram is appealing as an aperitif or enjoyed with fresh shellfish, caviar, smoked salmon, mild cheeses, seafood brochettes and risotto with prosciutto.THE 1999 VINTAGE"The 1999 J. Schram opens with aromas of glazed pineapple, orange marmalade and crisp green apples. Just-baked puff pastry and rich creamy notes are derived from barrel fermentation (38%) and yeast aging. This powerful sparkling wine showcases the bright citrus and tangy, tropical fruit of the Tognetti, Hyde and Schwarze Chardonnay vineyards along Bayview Avenue in southern Napa Carneros. The addition of 24% Pinot noir lends subtle red fruit aromas and gives breadth to both the nose and palate. A creamy yet refreshing wine, the 1999 J. Schram has a long, quenching, seamless finish.--Hugh Davies, WinemakerBlend: 74% Chardonnay; 26% Pinot NoirSource: Napa Co. 57%; Mendocino Co. 15%; Monterey Co. 15%; Sonoma Co. 13%Alcohol: 12.5%TA: 0.99g/100mlpH: 3.02Residual Sugar: 1.28%Bottle Size: 750mlRetail Price: $80.00Production: 3,940 6 pack casesJ.
