Pleasant aromatics and a nicely moderate nose. Tropical fruits, grapefruit and flinty character. Clean and refreshing and doesn't lean to far in any one direction. Nice. - Tasted at winery 4/21/10

A pale, creamy yellow. Hints of tropical fruit and grapefruit on the nose. An intense, complex and richly flavored wine with an incredibly lingering finish.

Most of the grapes are from the winery's original 1959 planting. It's a beautiful, refined Sauvignon Blanc, brimming with lemon and lime, freshly mowed green grass and tangy green apple flavors. Partial barrel fermentation adds a creamy complexity. The wine is totally dry and bright in acidity, but it's really the fruit that stars.

One of the finest examples of this varietal in California, Rochioli's Sauvignon Blanc is produced from extremely old vines. The terrific 2001 exhibits aromas of crushed rock, melons, and figs, medium body, lively acidity, and surprising flavor intensity as well as texture. It should drink well for 2-3 years, perhaps longer.

Good pale color. High-toned, estery aromas of lime oil and white peach. Penetrating, juicy and precise on the palate, with brisk flavors of orange, anise and fig. Uncompromising sauvignon blanc, finishing with terrific grip and persistence. Year in and year out, this is superb sauvignon.

Tom Rocioli has a way with sauvignon. He tinkers with it, barrel fermenting a small portion to give the wine structure, boldness, a wide-ranging scale, but he doesn't push, and the wine doesn't feel manipulated. After all the ripe expression of lime and tangerine, the flavors pull back, ending clean, lively and fresh. There's a subtlety to this wine that sets it apart, something you might appreciate as the day cools to evening on the wrap-around porch, with thick-cut veal chops on the grill.

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale yellow. Pure, high-pitched aromas of orange, lemon, minerals and anise, with a spicy topnote. Silky and nicely concentrated, with brisk flavors of citrus zest, quince and white flowers. Finishes tangy and firm but in no way tart, with dusty lime pith, lemongrass and honeysuckle qualities and excellent persistence. - Stephen Tanzer
