J. Rochioli Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley Estate Grown 2001

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

In this vintage, one of Sonoma’s top SBs scores points in all the requisite areas. A tiny bit of talc softens the tropical fruit bouquet. More exotic fruit is on the palate, highlighted by firm edges and some citrus rind. A bit of banana sweetens the long, dry finish, leaving you with the right overall impression.

With three generations of dedication to the land, Rochioli Vineyards and Winery has earned the reputation as one of Sonoma County's finest wineries. This family legacy began in 1938, when Joe Rochioli Sr. purchased land he had long farmed. He had the foresight to know that the soil of the Russian River Valley would one day produce some of the world's greatest wines. His son Joe Jr. embraced this vision and today craft renowned, terrior-driven wines built on a foundation of superb fruit. The result has been a decades-long tradition of outstanding vintages: Silky-smooth, fruit-forward Pinot Noirs; rich, opulent Chardonnays; and tangy, food-friendly Sauvignon Blancs. Always in demand, always revered and always rated among the best varietals to be sought anywhere in the world. This commitment to quality is unwavering and our promise to everyone who uncorks a bottle of our wine. Read less

One of the finest examples of this varietal in California, Rochioli’s Sauvignon Blanc is produced from extremely old vines. The terrific 2001 exhibits aromas of crushed rock, melons, and figs, medium body, lively acidity, and surprising flavor intensity as well as texture. It should drink well for 2–3 years, perhaps longer.

Rochioli is known for killer Pinot Noir but their Sauvignon Blanc ranks as one of California’s best. Reflecting the cool Russian River climate, this medium-bodied wine is crisp and tangy and sports a purity of flavors that range from lemongrass to passion fruit.

Rochioli’s forty-year-old vines produce concentrated fruit, and Tom Rochioli preserves that fruit with a beautiful, fresh clarity. This isn’t built up with oak (30 percent gets barrel fermented to fill out the mid-palate, a textural rather than a flavor component), nor is it full and weighty. Instead, it manages to be a mouthwatering wine of substance, powerful and gripping yet clean and elusive as spring water. And it’s easy to keep pouring the wine purely for its freshness and clarity without focusing on the length of flavor, on the white berry and gooseberry crispness that lasts. Enjoy it with soft-shell crab, or save a bottle for Dungeness season.
