J. Rochioli Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Robert Parker: The 2001 Pinot Noir River Block (225 cases) reveals a tremendous bouquet of candied cherries mixed with vanilla bean, smoke, and background flint characteristics. A lovely combination of red fruits continues on the palate. Medium-bodied and beautifully put together, with the delicacy and nicely-etched personality of a finely crafted Pinot, it should be consumed over the next 5-6 years. (Dec 2003)

With three generations of dedication to the land, Rochioli Vineyards and Winery has earned the reputation as one of Sonoma County's finest wineries. This family legacy began in 1938, when Joe Rochioli Sr. purchased land he had long farmed. He had the foresight to know that the soil of the Russian River Valley would one day produce some of the world's greatest wines. His son Joe Jr. embraced this vision and today craft renowned, terrior-driven wines built on a foundation of superb fruit. The result has been a decades-long tradition of outstanding vintages: Silky-smooth, fruit-forward Pinot Noirs; rich, opulent Chardonnays; and tangy, food-friendly Sauvignon Blancs. Always in demand, always revered and always rated among the best varietals to be sought anywhere in the world. This commitment to quality is unwavering and our promise to everyone who uncorks a bottle of our wine. Read less

My favorite 2001 here (as well as the most expensive) is the Pinot Noir East Block. Forest floor, flower, raspberry, and gamy, meaty notes bring to mind a great grand cru Burgundy from Flagey-Echezeaux...offers great fruit on the attack, a multilayer... Raspberries, cherries, smoke, flint, and subtle wood emerge from the stunning aromatics of the 2001 Pinot Noir West Block Vineyard. Sweet, dense, and rich, but firmly structured, with substantial size, it will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The awesome, black ruby-colored 1999 Pinot Noir East Block reveals an extravagant bouquet of black raspberries, cherry liqueur, and vanillin. Picked ripe, but with no sense of pruniness or hotness, this massive, full-bodied, unctuously-textured Pinot... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The 1999 Pinot Noir River Block, picked at 27o brix, displays no late harvest characteristics, but abundant glycerin as well as copious quantities of black cherry liqueur intermixed with floral, smoke, and earth characteristics.
