J. Rochioli Chardonnay Russian River Valley Estate Grown 2011

Member Review by John Andrews:

This is a great chardonnay that I think will improve with age. Right now I get pear, smoke and lemon in the aromas and in the taste. Acid felt a little low but I was getting towards the end of the day in tasting.

With three generations of dedication to the land, Rochioli Vineyards and Winery has earned the reputation as one of Sonoma County's finest wineries. This family legacy began in 1938, when Joe Rochioli Sr. purchased land he had long farmed. He had the foresight to know that the soil of the Russian River Valley would one day produce some of the world's greatest wines. His son Joe Jr. embraced this vision and today craft renowned, terrior-driven wines built on a foundation of superb fruit. The result has been a decades-long tradition of outstanding vintages: Silky-smooth, fruit-forward Pinot Noirs; rich, opulent Chardonnays; and tangy, food-friendly Sauvignon Blancs. Always in demand, always revered and always rated among the best varietals to be sought anywhere in the world. This commitment to quality is unwavering and our promise to everyone who uncorks a bottle of our wine. Read less

Update: Had this on it's own paired with a creamy fettuccini alfredo with rosemary, basil chicken. This time I was truly impressed. Held up well to the creamy sauce and herb chicken. I know, it wasn't a stretch pairing but one that definitely worked well in my opinion. Glad I still have a bottle of this left.

WOW...Incredibly balanced and full of RRV minerals. This is the best Rochioli Chard that I have ever had.

I bought this on sale for $45. A bold but young chardonnay, a delightful basket of flavors with oak, oatmeal and pears. But wouldn't pay above $45 for it.

This is an utterly seductive and graceful Chardonnay. Complex nose displays an ethereal, perfectly balanced mix of tropical fruit, citrus oil, apricot, mineral water, and subtle toasty/leesy notes. Rich yet light as air, it caresses rather than assaults the palate, and its qualities linger on long after it's swallowed. Not quite as deep and long as the 2005 River Block, but an absolute joy to drink.

A textbook example in how to make a Chardonnay that's ripely fruity and oaky, yet maintains impeccable balance. The orange, apricot, green apple and lime flavors hit the jackpot, while brisk acidity and minerality provide equilibrium. Possesses that ... Wine Enthusiast. Light gold. Aromas of orange poached pear ginger and toasty lees. Sweet and buttery on entry then nicely taut in the middle offering minerally orchard fruit and lemon curd flavors and a bright mineral nuance. Finishes chewy and tactile with lingering floral and spice notes and very good persistence. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Green-gold. Spicy pear, orange and gingerbread on the nose, with exotic Thai basil and smoky mineral qualities adding complexity. The 2006 Chardonnay River Block (Old Wente and Hanzell clones of Chardonnay) exhibits attractive notes of buttered citrus, wet rocks, lemon zest, orange blossom, peach, and subtle woodsmoke. It possesses superb ripeness, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, and excellent acidity. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.
