J. Rochioli Chardonnay Russian River Valley Estate Grown 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is a blend from our Estate Chardonnay vineyards. The blend consists of sixty-six percent Mid 40, twenty-two percent River Block, and twelve percent South River Vineyard. It is a fine example of the unique characters from our property and the Russian River Valley. Aromas of ripe apple, tropical fruit, vanilla and a touch of spice combine with the rich apple flavors and crisp acidity. Although young now, those with the patience to cellar this wine will be rewarded. 2150 cases were produced.

With three generations of dedication to the land, Rochioli Vineyards and Winery has earned the reputation as one of Sonoma County's finest wineries. This family legacy began in 1938, when Joe Rochioli Sr. purchased land he had long farmed. He had the foresight to know that the soil of the Russian River Valley would one day produce some of the world's greatest wines. His son Joe Jr. embraced this vision and today craft renowned, terrior-driven wines built on a foundation of superb fruit. The result has been a decades-long tradition of outstanding vintages: Silky-smooth, fruit-forward Pinot Noirs; rich, opulent Chardonnays; and tangy, food-friendly Sauvignon Blancs. Always in demand, always revered and always rated among the best varietals to be sought anywhere in the world. This commitment to quality is unwavering and our promise to everyone who uncorks a bottle of our wine. Read less

Update: Had this on it's own paired with a creamy fettuccini alfredo with rosemary, basil chicken. This time I was truly impressed. Held up well to the creamy sauce and herb chicken. I know, it wasn't a stretch pairing but one that definitely worked well in my opinion. Glad I still have a bottle of this left.

This is a great chardonnay that I think will improve with age. Right now I get pear, smoke and lemon in the aromas and in the taste. Acid felt a little low but I was getting towards the end of the day in tasting.

WOW...Incredibly balanced and full of RRV minerals. This is the best Rochioli Chard that I have ever had.

I bought this on sale for $45. A bold but young chardonnay, a delightful basket of flavors with oak, oatmeal and pears. But wouldn't pay above $45 for it.

This is an utterly seductive and graceful Chardonnay. Complex nose displays an ethereal, perfectly balanced mix of tropical fruit, citrus oil, apricot, mineral water, and subtle toasty/leesy notes. Rich yet light as air, it caresses rather than assaults the palate, and its qualities linger on long after it's swallowed. Not quite as deep and long as the 2005 River Block, but an absolute joy to drink.

Green-gold. Spicy pear, orange and gingerbread on the nose, with exotic Thai basil and smoky mineral qualities adding complexity. Fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors are impressively precise, picking up smoky minerality with air. Finishes strong, ... Stephen Tanzer. Wine Tasting NotesOur Estate Chardonnay is carefully blended using traditional methods, aged sur lie for 9 months in French oak barrels with complete mololactic fermentation. This wine has characteristics of fresh apple, floral, spice, intense fruit, and hints of vanilla. it has a long, rich finish that is balanced with a pleasant acidity.

The 2006 Chardonnay River Block (Old Wente and Hanzell clones of Chardonnay) exhibits attractive notes of buttered citrus, wet rocks, lemon zest, orange blossom, peach, and subtle woodsmoke. It possesses superb ripeness, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, and excellent acidity. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.
