J Lohr Syrah Paso Robles Usa California 2007

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Jammy blackberries and black currants on the nose show up again on the palate, where they are spiced up with a bit of black pepper and sour berry fruit. Panelists had mixed feelings about this wine's mouthfeel - some called it thick and syrupy, others though it smooth and full - but all agreed that it finishes quite tart.

Founded in 1972, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines crafts an array of acclaimed wines from estate vineyards in Monterey County, Paso Robles and Napa Valley. From this world-class palette of fruit, J. Lohr produces three tiers of award-winning wines – J. Lohr Estates, J. Lohr Vineyard Series and J. Lohr Cuvée Series. Selecting Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco appellation for his original vineyard, Jerry planted his first 280 acres of grapes beginning in 1972. Ideally suited for cool-climate winegrowing, these vineyards have become an acclaimed source for outstanding Chardonnay, Riesling, Valdiguié and Pinot Noir. At the heart of J. Lohr’s renowned red wine program are its 2,000 acres of estate vineyards in Paso Robles. Featuring warm, sunny days, cool nights and diverse soils, these vineyards have proven ideal for cultivating a flavorful array of grapes including voluptuous and complex Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc along with Syrah and Zinfandel. A superb value, this dark ruby/purple-colored Syrah exhibits notions of black fruits, licorice, and toasty French oak. Medium-bodied and well-made, with loads of up-front fruit, excellent balance, a nicely textured mid-palate, and a serious finish, it should be drunk over the next 3-4 years.

Made like an Aussie Shiraz, this is a fresh, young red packed with jammy raspberry, cherry, raw meat and spice flavors. The finish is very dry, with zingy acids and a dusty bite of tannins.

Deeply colored, youthful, plum red in color, the 1998 South Ridge Syrah has layered aromas of violets and rose with cherries, plum jam and berry fruit with roasted meat, licorice and orange peel. The flavors are full and plump, with red fruits, roasted meat and anise. Intensely flavored and extracted, this is both a big and a soft wine, with a balance of fruit, tannin and French oak that makes it an excellent accompaniment to grilled meats with rosemary, fennel and garlic.

This competent, deep ruby/purple-hued Syrah offers attractive black currant fruit, good acidity, and a medium-bodied palate impression. A good value, it can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years.
