J. Lohr 'Riverstone' Chardonnay 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Almost stony on the nose, with a nice, deep white floral note and hints of jasmine and light wild strawberry fruit. Round, soft and lightly honeyed on entry with tropical mango and papaya flavors along with dried apricot notes that are sweet and a little sticky. This has good acidity but plenty of sugar to make it sweet; while not cloying, it is almost a dessert-level sweetness for me. Would certainly be a great wine for spicy foods. 84pts

This is decidedly oaky on the nose, full of gingery spice with classic pineapple and lime aromas. A touch sweet and soft on entry, this is creamy with acids that perk up on the back end helping to define the pineapple fruit a touch more clearly. The wood spice is obvious but balanced by the fruit on the palate. You gotta love oak if you’re going to try this wine. 84pts

This is an amazing chard for the price, or any price. It is rich but light, balanced acidity, beautiful complex oak, a great glass to drink for sheer pleasure or to pair with almost any food. It is strong enough to stand up to rich red meat, and balanced enough to make a delicate grilled orata come to life. Reliable every year, Lohr is a bargain. Genius in the winemaking, blend and bottle. The best American white wine I have had at any price. We always have a case in the house. I have served it to French gourmets and pros, and they wefe stumped and amazed. It van linger a little too long, but you always get whatever you were looking for.

The 2013 Riverstone is quite underwhelming. Very little fruit is to be found, the nose is mostly oak, dilute tasting. Good acid though. Years ago, J. Lohr had some really nice Riverstone Chards. Something has changed here. My rating-- 72.

Nearly sparkling with a hint of sweetness, but overall on the dry side. Lemon lime fizz, brass doorknobs, and apricot spice on the palate. At only 12% alcohol, it's decent for a Wednesday evening.

This is a nice Riverstone and a good value at around $8. The nose has pear and honey but is a bit overpowered by the oak. Needs more fruit intensity but is an enjoyable wine. Not profound but not expensive either. My rating -- 86

I brought this wine to a friends dinner party. He made Seafood Newburg for the main course. We found that this Chardonnay paired very well with the richness of the dish.

Arroyo Seco Monterey, CaliforniaThe vines for J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay are grown primarily on Elder loam soils, underlain by "riverstones" deposited over thousands of years by the Arroyo Seco River. These stones limit soil depth from one to four feet, although roots are found at greater depths. This unique combination of sandy loam and cobblestone soils keep the vegetative growth and fruit in balance, while the cool climate and winds of the Salinas Valley extend the growing season - retaining the natural grape acids and intense varietal character of Chardonnay."The 2016 Riverstone Chardonnay exhibits youthful hues of light to medium straw. The enticing aromas are reminiscent of peaches, tangerine, yellow floral, baking spices, vanilla, and cocoa. These aromas echo on the palate and are complemented by fresh orange and apricot, balanced with creamy texture from aging sur lie. Flavors of crme brle and a touch of oak can be found on the long finish."- Kristen Barnhisel, J Lohr winemaker, white wineJ Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay can be enjoyed over the next 4-5 years with a variety of dishes, such as salmon in a creamy Dijon sauce, chicken with mushroom sauce, or Nioise salad with a citrus vinaigrette.

The aromas are of nectarine, peach pie and apple--combined with the perfumed vanilla and toasted oak bouquet from barrel and malolactic fermentation and sur lie aging--creating an elegant Chardonnay from Monterey's Arroyo Seco AVA. The flavors are very clean, with peach, nectarine and citrus with subtle butter and vanilla toastiness, producing layers of complexity with an excellent balance of fresh fruit acidity and palate weight.

This wine has a garnet color, and is adorned with aromas of red fruit, lilac, rose petal, vanilla and notes of sage and thyme. Tar, beeswax and oak frame the complex varietal character unique to Pinot Noir. Soft tannins.
